Default HELP! What are the Differences in NAV Systems???

Can anyone tell me the differences beteween the NAV Systems between the 98-2000(hard-drive) and 2001, and 2002-03's. (dvd based systems)

And any pros/cons between them.........

I would appreciate any info/knowledge anyone has to pass along, I am looking to pick up a new (to me) GS and this time I definately want the nav...........

Thanks.........

I think the DVD based system is faster and has a bigger screen.

dvd has maps for the hwole US. i think for hdd you can only get certain regions

and of course, dvd has tons more POI, etc...

also starting 02+, if you get nav, you get ML as well. 01 was the only yr they are separate options. and for the 98-00, if you get nav i think you can't get nak audio

Rominl,
If I wanted to add the DVD Navigation to my GS300, would I have to get the full ML system. I am looking into purchasing one on ebay, and was not sure the difference between ML and the regular HD Navigation.

TIA

it depends on what yr you got. if you are lucky to find a nav system from 01, yes it's possible that it's only nav and no ML. but if you found a nav system from 02+, then it has ML for sure.

from the information i have gathered so far, putting nav on the non-nav hard is relatively ok, not too hard. but putting the ML on the non ML car is a real pain in the butt, if you want to do it right.

also, when you get the stuff, make sure you get all the harness too, otherwise you will be really screwed. and you definitely don't even want to get a quote about those harness from dealership

The 2001 an up Systems have a lot more POI's as previously said, they also have 1/16th zoom in smaller cities unlike the 98-00 systems which are 1/4 mile zoom in most small cities and by small I mean ~100k population. They also have more street detail whch allows you to trype in an address in these cities.

For 2004 the LS has even more features including footprints of buildings, voice command, ++

BTW, I have the 98 system with the 2003 updates there is no comparison in detail when it comes to smaller cities yet it is still an awesome system. Dont get me wrong the 98-00 system is much better then most out there and very user friendly, I drove a 2003 ML55 for about a week I would pay to have that POS taken out, no comparison to the 98 Lexus navigation.

The HD (98-00) systems do have the whole U.S. also. But as has been said, not as many points of interest and only state/co. roads in small cities.

Hehe, no need to apologize! One point of clarification - the HD one has data divided into 4 'regions' that one must select from initially. Searches constrain themselves to that region. The regions are pretty much time zones I think (East, Central, Mountain, Pacific). Don't know if the DVD one does the same thing. Regardless as to whether it's for speed, it makes a lot of sense since if I search for "main street" I don't really care about ones in Seattle (given that I'm in Atlanta).

I'll check, but I'm pretty sure the new DVD has 10 zones for cont. US and southern Canada. It may be 12, though...I'll have to look.

i know the zone i am in has only CA and NV in it, so i am not surprised if it's done in more than 4 zones in the dvd based system
