Default ? re OEM spoiler

I recently became the second owner of a 1998 GS4. The first owner had Lexus install what he thought was the factory spoiler, but it was actually some aftermarket brand (I think it looks a little silly -- look closely). Anyway, does anyone know whether the holes used to mount the current spoiler can be used to mount the OEM spoiler? I don't want to have to drill more holes in the trunk.

I dont think the holes that you have from the aftermarket spoiler is the same as the OEM one. The OEM one uses special brackets to hold the spoiler down to the trunk.

Ditto. Besides the fact that the holes have almost a non existant chance of being the same.

What looks silly about it? Looks pretty normal to me.

Take a close look. It ends at the trunk line and doesn't extend over the sides of the trunk. Also, it's slightly crooked.

Assuming the holes cannot be reused, does anyone know if it's a big deal to plug holes and drill new ones?

Uhhh, many of them do that (including mine). It's normal for about 75% of the GS's I've seen with spoilers. Fewer have the OEM spoiler that extends over the trunk either on the sides or trunk lid edge.

If it's really crooked, that's another issue. But I personally wouldn't spend the time and money to change it to the other style spoiler.

Edit - here's a post with lots of pictures of the OEM spoiler like you'd like to have:

From what I understand, both of these spoiler styles are considered OEM but Lexus gets different manufactureres to build them and they're slightly different specs.

in regards to the spoilers

with my silver gs i had (may it rest in peace) i had a aftermarket spoiler installed on it , it was much lighter then oem , did not stand as tall and was smaller . it felt like a cheap piece of plastic..

now with my black gs , this one is solid , much heavier and stands taller and is bigger .. there is a diff in the two.. mounting is almost the same

Wow. I had no idea that there would be so much info on this topic (although nothing really amazes me anymore with this forum). All else being equal, I prefer the one that came from the factory. It stands taller and flares out wider than the one I have. If the mounting screws are the same, great, no problem. If not, I agree with all of you that it's probably not worth my time and money. Oh well.

imo it is worth changing to oem style if its cheap enough (wink wink)

heres a rear shot of mine compared to other aftermarket cheapo's

another closeup shot , see how even the upper edge has a slight ridge or lift to it

Thanks, I agree. There's someone on the forum selling an OEM spoiler in alpine silver. I may buy it, but I need to make sure that it won't be too much of a headache to swap it out. I assume mine is worth some money, but probably not much.
