around 90K mile service the timing belt needs to be replaced. Also the water pump and pulley sometimes needs replacement. I just had my service done at the dealer. It was like $1600. That included new water pump and pulley.
If you are doing all of it yourself, good luck. You'll save a lot in labor.

If you can rate yourself a 7 on a scale from 1-10 in auto mechanics, then the timing belt is a breeze with the proper tools.
You should replace all of the idler pulleys as well since they will have almost 200k on them the next time around. As mentioned earlier, replace the water pump.
The fuel filter is in the fuel tank and is about 30.00. Lexus does not recommend chaning it, but it would be a good idea at 90k miles.

For the 90K service, and also as you just got the car (not knowing the previous maintenance), here's what I'd do preventatively:
1. ATF drain and refill (gets about 22% per drain and refill)
Materials: if doing a drain and refill, 2 quarts per drain and refill (however, I'd just buy a case of 12 and you'll be set for a while, esp. if you do a couple of sequential drain and refills; specifies usage of Toyota T-IV)
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...hreadid=107022
2. Rear differential drain and refill (gets about 99% old fluid out)
Materials: 2 quarts of gear oil (GL-5, I believe; 75W-90, 80-90, or straight 90 weight), although you only will need 1.5 quarts to fil up the differential
3. Power steering fluid change (siphon out or do a full flush)
Matrials: 3 quarts of ATF (yes, ATF (not power steering fluid); either Toyota T-II or T-III, probably T-IV would work just fine)
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...hreadid=118649
4. Spark plug replacement (pretty easy to do, about 2 hrs start to finish if you take your time)
5. Air filter replacement (about $22, in the engine bay; self explanatory)
6. A/C incabin filter replacement (about $32, it's located behind an acess panel in the glovebox, pull out the tray and replace with the new filter)
7. Brake bleeding
8. Timing belt (including coolant flush): Here's what you should replace (same charge as replacing just the timing belt itself as it's in the same area--parts prices are at 20% discount off retail, like from Carson Toyota or Hoy Fox Toyota):
a. timing belt ($40)
b. L timing idler pulley ($60)
c. R timing idler pulley ($63)
d. timing belt tensioner ($43)
e. water pump and gasket ($95)
f. thermostat and gasket ($12)
If you buy the above discounted parts, a good number of Lexus dealers will just charge you labor for the install fee to help defray some of this expensive maintenance cost. I've checked w/ my Lexus dealer, and they are going to charge me $514 to do it (assumming I furnish the above parts), and they'll change the coolant as well. That's significantly better than $1500 that one dealer was going to charge me (if I had them supply the parts and to cover for the labor).
LASTLY
FYI, to help cut down on costs, just go to a Lexus dealer with your VIN number and ask them for a maintenance history of the car--they'll give you a free printout of what has exactly been done to it. That way, you don't need to say repeat a change of the rear diff gear oil if had been done at 80K. . .

INSPECTIONS (additional 90K items)
1. brake lines (hoses), linings and pads
2. steering linkages/steering gear
3. ball joints and dust cover
4. drive shaft boots
5. transmission fluid (actual 90K is inspection, not replacement)
6. rear diff oil (again, actual 90K is inspection, not replacement)
7. road test
Here's the Lexus recommended services for model year 1999 vehicles:

It is in my opinion, if you are having the dealer do the service, to just skip their official 90K recommended service checks and tell them to do the services you probably can't do (like timing belt) or feel is too messy. Most of the services above (except 5 and 6) they'll check for you as a courtesy while they're doing your timing belt anyways.
As you can see, most of the things done at 90K are just inspections with the exception of the sparkplug and timing belt replacement services--the dealer charges quite a bit for "90K" service, and if you broke it up piecemeal (specifying EXACTLY what you want), it'll probably be much cheaper.

SeattleGS400.... Is there any place that you would recommend for doing the 90K service up in the seattle area? I just need a place that can replace my belts and pulleys. All of the other things I can do myself. Thanks
