From SC to GS ??
Hey guys I have been here for a while in the SC section as I have a 92SC400.
I am looking at getting a GS, don't know what model though or year probably the cleanest one at the best price I can afford ( trying to stay at like $18K )
I know all the little quirks in the SC's if I were to buy another one, is there anything specific that I should look for in a GS ? Also what engines do the GS400's use is it the same 1UZ-FE as in the SC's ?

FWIW, the GS should be quieter, smoother riding, faster (especially compared to the non-VVTi SCs), more practical, and easier to work on than.
Not much reason to stick with an SC300 or SC400 IMO unless you like the lower cost, prefer a 2-door or like some of the cross-over mods you can get from the Supra camp.
The SC430 on the other hand... YUM.
And as was already said, the motor in the 98-00 GS400s is the same basic setup as is found in the 98-00 SC400s, although the GS had a few revisions and made a little more power than the SCs of the same year. The 4.3L is in the 01+ GS4s... it's not really different though except for around 5% more torque due to the extra 0.3 liters of displacement. No extra horsepower but it gets 32-bit engine control modules instead of 16-bit, though I've never heard of why that is.

I went from a 92 SC400 to a 99 GS400 for the extra doors and space...Can anyone say 2 under 3 year olds in car seats, anyhow. The GS is noticably faster, smoother, quieter and practical. On the down side the suspension is softer and allows much more body roll. The GS does not seem as sporty being a 4 door and higher off the ground. I much prefer the the SC's interior syling. After living with my GS for over a year I could not go back to a SC.

Thanks guys. My SC400 has 220K miles on it and purrs like a dream so now that I know the engines are pretty much the same I don't mind picking up a high mileage GS if I can get one in good shape like my SC was.

I drove a SC 400 before the GS. Never looked back. The SC stock, IMO handles better than the GS but after I modded the GS it wasn't close to a stock SC 400, far superior. The SC has way better seats, IMO.
THe GS is much quicker, it just accelerates like hell.
I will say the SC 400 is what made me decide I will never, ever buy another FWD car again.
Both are built solid as a rock. The BIGGEST difference in driving, the SC has that long hood and is easier to see out of the sides and rear. THe GS has a shorter hood which feels sportier to me and rear visiblity is not as good.
In summary (and what magazine reviews said in 1998)
GS 400 drives like a SC but is faster and room for 5 with stuff. Nuff said.
