Default do they always lowball so badly

After putting 3k in repairs on my 98 gs 300 w/nav I decided to see what my car might be worth on trade in with a lexus dealership.

I knew they might lowball but this seemed way too low.

They gave me a range of $6-8k for my vehicle in trade.

I have 130k on my vehicle and it's in pretty fine condition considering it's age and hi mileage.

Based on my perusing on ebay and my local papers I figured if I really wanted to sell it now I'm figuring it's worth 13-14k on the open market. A '98 gs 300 w/nav is a pretty rare bird, no? The nav I figure put's a premium on this vehicle of around $500 or so.

Never trade-in unless you are prepared to be low-balled. I'd sell it on my own thru the classified section.

thats because the dealerships give you wholesale value on your trade-in and they sell there cars at full retail

They also do it because of the convenience, they no its a pain to sell the car personally, so you will pay a premium just to sign and drive.

I traded in my 96 GS with 99k miles and immaculate paint/condition for my 98, and trust me, they took advantage of me! LOL

They definately do...this is why they have huge facilities...they didn't build themselves!

Sell it private party!

$15k has to be about right? maybe even more depending on your local market.
