Default Looking to buy a GS need help.

Sometime soon (probably Labor Day) i'll be looking to buy a GS for my lady. I need some info on:

Common problems (if any) on the GS 1999-2001
Colors and trims
Differences between models GS300, 400, 430
Options / Standard
What to look for when buying a used GS...

I really want a black interior.. and prob will stick with a GS300 unless I can find a 400 in the right price range. 26K is the total i'm looking to spend out the door.

Thanks for your hep in advance!

C'mon mang, u have been a member for WAYYY too long for these newb questions LOL

Seriously, nothing major on the GS squeaks, creaks, low idle on 400 pretty much sums it up.

Hey Joe

So you are willing to spend up to $26K?

In that case, I'm sure you can get a 02 or 03 GS300 (depending on the # of miles and the overall condition)for $26K.

If you want extra power, go for the GS430. The GS400 is a model made before the year 2001.
You might be able to get a 00 or an 01 GS430 for $26K.

Good luck.

Donald:

What mileage did you refer to getting either GS3 or 43 at $26K?

Hi there

Sorry but I am not sure about the mileage. My guess is around 60,000. I may be wrong.

But if the GS430 has the Mark Levinson System and the NAV, then it will be difficult to find one for around $26K.

I would check on www.edmunds.com for more info.

I hope that helps.

[/b]1. Common problems (if any) on the GS 1999-2001[/b]
Some squeaks, low idle speed, rare problem - door lock actuaters

2. Colors and trims
Most popular colors are black on black, silver on black, blue (the best color imho) on beige

Differences between models GS300, 400, 430
GS300 has a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine
GS400 has a 4.0 liter V8 engine
GS430 has a 4.3 liter V8 engine

If I were you I would get a 99 or 2000 GS400. Practically everyone that has driven a GS300 and a GS400, always preferred the GS400 because of the huge difference in power.

Other popular options to get would be the navigation system. You can always upgrade the stock stereo, so I would not be too concerned about the Mark Levinson system

Buying a GS is a no brainer:

The top 15 brands in the most recent initial quality survey were: Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Toyota, Volvo, Honda, BMW, Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln, Saturn, Porsche, Chevrolet, Mercedes and Chrysler. They ranged in number of complaints per 100 vehicles from 88 for Lexus to 133 for Chrysler. The top 15 individual vehicles were: Lexus LS 430, Lincoln Blackwood, Lexus SC430, Lexus GS300/GS430, Mercedes S-Class, Buick Century, Ford Thunderbird, Mercedes SL-Class, Lexus LX470, Chevy Monte Carlo, Acura TL and Lincoln Town Car. The range here was from 56 to 94.

The top five brands? Those with the fewest problems after four to five years on the road? Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Honda and Toyota, proving that if they are built correctly in the first place, they will be more reliable. This survey was conducted among 30,000 owners of 1998 models, some of which were sold in 1997.
