Question Uh oh...i bottomed out really really bad...weird shaking now..any ideas?

Ok, my girl, and 2 friends are in the car drivin to my parents house in the boonies.... goin about 55 on the back roads and there was a dip in the road which i didnt see in time. now i have bottomed out before, but never this bad. the whole car shook, and made a loud screech crunch sound

i got out and looked, didnt see anything loose, no fluid leaks. but now from about 55mph to 65 mph...i get a weird shaking, as if the wheels need balancing... EXCEPT, this is a little different.

the steering wheel will be smooth for 1 second, then shakes, then smooth, then shakes...back and forth when im goin between 55 and 65.

possible loose steering rod?

Do some crosschecks:

1. 4 wheel Alignment
2. tie rods, ball joints, axles
3. Brakes (you might be slamming on the brakes really hard during the dip and that usually spells bad)
4. Shock/coilovers ( I bottomed out 3-4x and found out on the rack that my front 2 coilovers were blown)

check to see if any of your wheels are bent or not.

damn, that's not good. check out all the wheels, specially fornt, to see if they are bent. i really think they might be bent. check the balance of the wheels. do a 4 wheel alignment. get teh resule, see if you bent the control arm, joints, etc.... do things in that order

imo 1 of 3 things

either you popped a ball joint , which explains the on and off shaking or
you bent the castor arm and/or tore the rubber inner bushing or
the lower control arm bushing is torn or arm itself is bent

thats all i can think of as a result of what you described

thanks for the help ppl.

but when i went back to look at the dip in the road....it wasnt a hole or anything where the rim would get jarred, it was just a dip in the road....were the bottom of the frame hit

i will get the wheels balanced today..and see what happens.

Being the connoisseur of bent wheels that I am, IMO they don't ususally come and go like you describe. The ride gets incrementally rougher in the car the worse the bend is, but it's pretty regular except at very low speeds.

You need to get this thing up on a rack and have it checked out. Could be dangerous.

I would also check the brackets and bolts that hold the front sway bar on. That could have been damaged too.

I suspect you either bent a rim or two, or you've damaged the suspension or steering components.

How bad is the bend? May not be a good idea to just move it to the back and act like everything is OK?
