Like the topic says.
I'm in the market for a car and I have been thinking of either a 98 or 99 LS400 or a 98 or 99 GS400. I love the concept of driving around in one of the most luxurious cars ever made (the LS), but the 6.0 0-60 and the easy modification of the GS400 is also appealing. I guess the question is... is the LS400 THAT MUCH MORE luxurious to drive and be in than the GS400? Is the GS400 THAT MUCH MORE quick and fun to drive than the LS? I love luxury but I also love driving, which are two things that don't often come together in a car. Let me know your opinion, they're all valid to me. Thanks!

I own both a 98 GS400 and a 98 LS400. You won't go wrong with either one.
IMO: The LS is a more solid, quieter car and has fewer quirky annoyances (sunroof rattle for example) than the GS does. In the front, both ride about the same from a seat / room perspective stock. The LS has more room in back and in the trunk. The GS handles a bit better, looks sportier and is slightly faster - they both share the same engine and the LS is right on the heels of the GS in performance. The LS is king on the highway, just a wonderful long tripper. The GS has a much larger aftermarket and you'll get more compliments on the road with it.

I have a 98 GS400 and my brother has a 2000 LS400, let me first say that in the hands of a capable driver the LS400 is NO SLOUCH. My brother got his wheels installed last weekend and we went out ot play with the 2cars a little bit, and that LS moves. honestly I think it comes down to driver skill. Also, I am 6'4", so I can feel a big difference when I jump from the GS to the LS and back. The LS is a much wider car with a wider footwell, and more shoulder space. The GS interior is more sporty and intimate.
In the end, I wanted the best of both worlds which is why I chose the GS, my brother wanted all out luxury so he chose the LS (and got the bonus of a damn good performer), so I guess you should use the same reasoning to help with your decision!

the ls430 is even quieter of course, but it's comparable to the gs430. to me the gs400/430 tends to have a bit more road noise than the ls430 when running. if you are talking about dead stop, the gs430 and ls430 are pretty much the same, with the gs400 a bit louder
ride quality the ls430 is definitely a lot more comfortable than the gs400/430, whichis more performance oriented. but still, the gs400/430 imho is way too comfortable to be assocaited with the term sporty stiff feel
