well you CAN NOT cover the ENTIRE hood. from the stuff you can get, the widest i have seen, is 18 inches i believe. most of them are 12 inches. so that's about how much you can protect on the hood. i believe the one on my hood (from xpel) is 12 inches.

You can probably have the hood done and your entire car covered if you wanted to. The ones they sell online are pre-cut to a specific car. There is a company (I believe it's xpel, armorglove, or stoneguard, etc, etc ) that sells to dealers the uncut rolls of this stuff. Whatever the company, nontheless, most of them are made by 3M and they are just relabeled. The only thing different is these companies pre-cut them differently to a specific car and the warranty that they provide is also different.

So you can cover a larger area, but there will be a seam.
I have heard that there is another company offering film that is suposed to be better than the 3M film. They claim it has a smoother finish with less orange peel, so that it looks better on darker color cars, especially black. (DaveGS4, you reading this? )
I just started looking into this, so hopefully I'll know more in a few weeks.

The film makers on the market only make the ppf (paint protection film) up to 48", which is not enough to cover the whole hood. On cars w/ smaller hoods, such as the S2000 it is possible to get that covered all the way, but for Lexus vehicles, there will be about 3-4" of exposure to the sides..........not that visible though, but it is still there. 3M, Venture, and Llumar are all coming out w/ a 60" roll in the next few months, so you guys could just wait it out or find a dealer that carries the 48" rolls.

You can go to the xpel website and request the install video. It's a 15-20 min vid on an M3 install. You can watch the vid and decide if you feel lucky enough to get the material or bring it to an installer.
