Manual shift option on the Gs430 and 540i
Does the GS430 come with some kind of control of shifting?
I tried looking up this information on the Lexus website but there is no mention of manual-shift paddles or buttons for the 2001-2004 GS430. I know that the Gs300 has it. I was wondering if the later models of the Gs430 had it too. It seems that the manual shift is a pretty useful thing to have, considering the sporty nature of the car. I am trying to decide between a preowned 540i and Gs430. The engine performance of the GS430 seems to be better than that of the 540i but the 540i has that Steptronic transmission with manual shift capability (and a sportier suspension).

You could also consider a low mileage 2000 GS400 with e-shift. Not sure just how 'new' you want to buy.

I too was considering the 540i vs. GS400/430. I won't go into all the reasons I went with the GS, but will tell you that I love this car and am glad it has the e-shift feature. I use it frequently and like it a lot!
Not a lot of difference between the '00 GS400 and '01GS430 (engine displacement up, HP and performance same). Yeah, I know there are some other differences too, but essentially the same car.
If you can find a super clean low mileage '00 GS400 that might be the best choice for you.
Of course, I am slightly biased!

and yeah of course trhe c32 can kill the gs400/430 any day man, that's a freaking fast car. but it's also damn small as well as the fact that it might spend a lot of time at the shop

EV ftw!!!
Get a low mileage 99 or 2000 GS400. I have a 99 and I use the e-shift buttons a lot especially on on-ramps and doing any kind of spirited driving in the twisties.

Convert it to E-Shift Paddle
What needs to be done to add the paddle shifting to a 98 GS300?
Seems to me its simply the transmission control unit and the paddle assembly instead of the stock 98 shifter?
Does anyone know for sure?

I thought the paddle shift was also located at the shift-plate where the std shufter is?
Does the steering wheel just have the on/off button?
What about electronic transmission control unit?
I think the tranny itself is identical in all 300's and 400's right?

~It's not really a "paddle" shift, rather a "button" shift I guess. There are 4 buttons on the steering wheel hub-two on the front and two on the back. Two on the front are for down shifting and the two on the rear are for upshifting. Easy to use, works great! Just have to put the shifter in the "Manual" mode and leave it there to use eshift.
