As you can see I've had this car for 2 weeks a lot of minor problem that I'm tired of dealing with. Bad tranny mnt, and bad coil a long with some other small problems. The previous owner is a friend of mine and he offered to take the car back and give me all my money back. Or spend the money and get these thing repair. I'm thinking of either give it back to him and find an 01" LS430, but I also like the speed of the GS4 especially with E shift. I know I won't find a y2k GS4 with only 40k for $20k. That's what I paid for mine...
Lets just say even w/o the problems would you take the 01' LS430 over a y2k GS4?

I certainly would take an LS430. The LS430 is nearly as quick, and handles quite well for the size. Depends how sporty you like. I would say that the mino problems are quite rare, and after they've been fixed, it's unlikely you'll have more hassle. The GS400 is one of the most reliable cars available period...., new or used!

So I guess the answer is LS430 is the way to go... my first car was an 86 volvo 740 turbo, then went to a 92 acura legend then an 02 tahoe then ow this. However, I'm very picking with any kind of cabin noise. I feel the GS isn't quite as quiet as I would like it to be. The LS however is super quiet and it was only a 99 ls400 that I was driving. I can probably hear my gf breathing. I'm gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and find an 01 ls430 and test it out.

How fast is the LS430? Haven't driven one yet, The closest thing I've gotten into was a y2k LS4. Nice front end but the rear end looks too much like the old body style which kind of blew it.

If you do, I agree with you. The LS is probably a little better for all-around-use, especially if you are tired at the end of a long work day and want a smooth, quiet car to relax in. And, as you point out, the LS430 will still get out of its own way.

You have a great friend. Grow up, be an adult and accept your purchase decision. He sold the car, you got an unbelievalbe price, let him/her move on, if you do not like the car you can easily sell it or may even trade it for close what you paid. If you do not like cabin noises, a quirk I have, I do not think you will be any happier in an LS430. It may have less wind noise but that is it. It will more likely have more problems since it has more options. If you were going from a GS300 to LS 430 no brainer get the larger engine but you already have the GS400.
The GS is much funner to drive and in my opinion better brakes and just as "plush". Hands down the LS430 has more curb appeal and respect.
I know my advice on the purchase may be harsh but in Texas if you buy a used car and it breaks down in the sellers driveway before you leave the seller can get it towed and you will have to pay for it. Usually the seller has no obligation.

I'm just throwing options out there.... here in CA there's this thing called consumer protection and it can huant the seller even 1 year after the purchase.... but of course this guy is my friend so he's not gonna get any of that crap. If I was selling something to my friend and he had problems after 2 weeks of owning it. I'd offer to take it back too. But that's not the point here....
My original question was. which would you rather have?
before I asked this question I've already check the market as well as reviews. Seems like the LS430 have a lower rating than the GS400 but for the comfort of the LS430 is pretty nice. GS4 has lack of leg room compared to the LS. Well it's too soon to determine anything anyways,
PS: Please keep those comments to yourself, you don't know my status so don't judge me.

An 01 LS 430 is going to run about 38K, so are you willing to dish out another 18K? You are not going to trade dollar for dollar.
Grow up, be an adult

Yah I thought that was pretty cool of him too, I never demand for my money back or anything. We keep in touch and he knows about the problems cause we'd talk about it. I have other options instead of giving it back to him. Like selling it after the repair.. that's why I ended the post with "Lets just say even w/o the problems would you take the 01' LS430 over a y2k GS4?"
So technically my question was which vehicle would you rather have. If you can afford either vehicle and didn't mine the price increase.
Apology accepted.

If i am going to take your question just PURELY from the question alone (without looking at your problems, etc), it would be a no-brainer answer.
If you switch to a 2001 LS430, you will get a newer car, bigger engine, more luxurious interior, better options and amenities and like someone said, more respect and curb appeal.
But then again, you will be paying QUITE A BIT MORE markup for all the above extras. Are you willing to go that route?
