My steering wheel makes a squealing noise when I adjust it and while it autmatically adjusts. I went to the dealer and they told me that all they needed to do was take apart the wheel and grease it up. $350 they told me. I don't feel that is reasonable...do you? I rather do something else with the money than donate it to someone with more $$ than me. Anybody took this into your own hands?

Thanks.

Do a search of the site.

I remember a week or two ago someone had a problem with their steering wheel not moving and he described how he got under the dash and found the "trap door" on the steering column where the gears are.

Thanks,
I'll check that out and see/hear where the squealing is coming from.

0110101,
What year is your car and is it under warranty? The noise you hear when you put the key in the ignition and the wheel moves to the set position and vice versa is the gears needing grease as the dealer you went to stated. This is a known issue in warmer climates as my car did it when I had it in Miami, the dealer knew about it and adjusted some pins and greased it up, has been fine since. It was under warranty so I didn't pay a dime. If you are under warranty, have them fix it free of charge. Best of luck.

Yes,
unfortunately I just passed my 60k mile warranty on my 98 GS400...I racked some highway miles on it and still looks and runs like new!! I don't want the dealers to gain more profit from me if unless I can't fix it myself. I see it as a learning process...more I know about my car more I feel ONE with it.

Default Steering Wheel Noise

I had a similar problem ... very subtle noise in the steering column when turning to the limits of wheel turn. Like a very light spring grind and pop. Lexus fixed it under warranty ... apparantly they replaced a small spring, but I never got the exact detail on what it does. I will check the repair invoice and post more detail if I can get it.

Default Try the Warranty Anyway

0110101,

You may be able to get it fixed under warranty even if you've just exceeded the 60k miles.

The dealers have some leeway on the mileage if they want to stretch it for you. If you've established a relationship with the service folks at the dealership they may cover it under warranty.

Might be worth a try to have them take a look at it.
