Dave,

This has been discussed many times before, just searching will get you lots of input with no waiting.

I searched for 'which gs400 gs430' and found these among many others:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ch+gs400+gs430
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ch+gs400+gs430
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ch+gs400+gs430
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ch+gs400+gs430
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ch+gs400+gs430

Some of the differences (others in the threads above):

4.3 liter engine with slightly more tq vs 4.0 same HP
e-shift on GS400 (98 - 00), not on GS430 (01+)

the 98-00 GS has nakamichi as the upgrade sound system. also the navigation system is hdd base. and i believe you can only get one of the two and not both. on the 01+ GS, the upgraded audio is mark levinson. also all navigation systems are dvd based now. in 2001, the ML audio and the nav were separate options, you can get one or the other, or you can get both. but since 2002 they have become a combo option, you have to get both ML and navigation together if you want to upgrade. the stock premium audio system hasn't changed since 98, they are pioneer

the 01+ GS430 has a new style engine cover compared to 98-00 GS400. however you can't fit the engine cover on the GS400, the bolt patterns are different.

GS430 has different
Gauge cluster
TailLights
Headlights
Exhaust tips
gearshift bezel
Wood ashtray
Compass rear view mirror
Wood steering wheel

Lightbulb ????

Ok if there was a 400 and a 430 with the same miles and color... and taking into consideration that the 400 has Eshift, HDD Nav, pioneer system and no side Air bag,
compared to a
430 without Eshift, DVD Nav, ML system, side air bag

And taking into consideration that the 430 will be about a couple of Gs more.

Which would you get?

Basically which car is a better bargain?

Would the DVD and ML system be worth spending more?

I'd go 430, even though I love the E-shift. I'll take the newer car with more torque, airbags, and better sound system.

Default Color terminology

Just to point this out to you nyczdave, generally when we mention our color choices on a Lexus, we state it as "[exterior color] on [interior color]". There are many choices for the exterior, but only a handful or less for the interior. Exterior colors tend to change their lineup after every model year, but a majority of the interior colors are kept the same throughout. For example, the most common interior colors on a Lexus GS ('98+) are black, ivory and light charcoal. You stated that you are looking for Black on Black, or Black on Blue. Perhaps you mean Blue on Black (as there is no factory interior color for blue)?

I bought my '01 GS430 in late '00 and could have bought a new holdover '00 GS400 at the same time, so I've considered this before. To me the DVD-based navigation + Mark Levinson + steering wheel audio controls + upgraded interior and taillights (much of which can now be retrofitted) + extra torque pushed me toward the GS430. I've gotten GS300s and IS300s with E-Shift and have used it (though never on a GS400), and frankly I prefer gate shifting which you can do on the GS430 anyway. All of these gear selecting/holding techniques on an automatic transmission are slugging and not really at all like a true manual transmission, so I'd recommend not including that as a high priority consideration. Others may hold the exact opposite opinion of course.

My vote would be for the 430.

I bought a 2000 for a few reasons:

- I wanted Spectra Blue (2000 was the last year for this color) with grey or black leather (couldn't find black, got grey)
- E-Shift (it turns out I use this feature daily!)
- Greater 'tunability' of engine
- Better performance (seems like the 400s are actually a bit quicker than the 430s)

By the way, my 2000 has side air bags...

You're both kind of correct. Even my 1998 has side impact airbags, but what the 2001 + have in addition are side "curtain" airbags. From Lexus.com

Changes Made To The 2001 GS 430

Standard Features:
- Front and rear side-curtain airbags (SRS)[3]

The Lexus driver's, front passenger's, and front seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain airbags are a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The driver's and front passenger's airbags are designed to inflate in a severe frontal collision. The side-impact and side-curtain airbags are designed to inflate in a severe side-impact collision. In all other accidents, the airbags will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from a deploying airbag, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat, and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an airbag or around the seatback. Do not use rearward-facing child seats in any front passenger seat. The force of a deploying airbag SRS may cause serious injury. Please see your Owner's Manual for further instructions.
