Default Potential GS buyer looking for advice...

Hi all. I currently have a 1995 Infiniti G20tA and I love it, but since I left for college my sister has been driving it and has fallen in love with it. As a result I am considering giving it to her and looking for a new car. My top choices are either a 1997.5 Infiniti J30t or a 1998 Lexus GS300. Both are comparable, stats wise but I like the GS better in general just because it seems more modern and it's a more attractive car (J30 is somewhat ugly). Are there any problems associated with the 98 since it was the first year it was made? And is the GS really worth the thousands more over a J30?

How did you get the J30 to be a top choice?

I understand. You had a Infinity before and want another one. But I think the GS would be a better choice.

Good luck on your search

my car is a 98 gs300 with 117k, no problems what so ever, still runs smooth, i think my engine actually runs so much smoother than my moms 2005 es330. infiniti cars loose its value really fast but i still like their cars also, but since i have a lexus go for the lexus

Welcome to CLublexus. Some quick facts.

J30 is gone. Discontinued. History. Bye Bye. No longer. Peace. C-ya. Never sold well, never won anything, it was okay.

98 GS 300, car of the year, 10 best winner, most reliable in class, wins comparisons or fairs well.

No comparison. The GS also is bigger on the inside but slightly shorter than the J30. The GS was designed to meet and beat the 5 series.

THe J30 is not a bad car. But there is a reason why the GS is the Premium Japanese Luxury Sport sedan and the J30 can be found at Al's Used Car Lots for $4,000 and a ham sandwich....

You so crazy sicklex Can't speak for a 98 but my 99 is JUST AWESOME!!! You won't go wrong. I'm sure more 98 owners will chime in.

The J became a top choice due to its low price and I drove a 1995 J30 before I bought my current Infiniti and was impressed with it. It shares a platform and engine/drivetrain with the Nissan 300zx which gives it excellent handling and power, but like 1sicklex said there's definately a reason why it failed to win any hearts. I also figured the J would be a good comparison to the GS300 because on paper they're pretty similar (RWD 6-cylinder luxury sport sedans).

Test drive the GS and see which you like better. I vote for the GS, but get whichever makes you happy.

I used to own a '96 J30 and would recommend the GS over it any day...both are good cars and the J gave me very little problems, but I think you will be better off with the GS in the long run.

Good luck

Yeah I've been trying to get a GS testdrive but haven't found any in my price range, and I don't want to waste a salesperson's time if I can't afford the car. I'm in car sales myself (summer and winter breaks from school) so I know how annoying it is to get people who can't afford the car and just want to drive it. I'm hoping to find a silver one with the spoiler, or maybe the medium red color (not the maroon) or the cobalt blue color I've seen on a few GSs...

I have a 98 GS300 with 71,000. Ive owned the car since late 01, and put about 10K a year on it.

[knock on wood] I have never had any problems with it. [/knock on wood]

It drives and feels better than some of the newer cars out there. i feel confident that I can drive this car forever.

You cant go wrong with the GS

There was a guy that posted yesterday tha was trying to sell a 2000 GS 300 for $12K. It had 140K miles but who cares, his pictures are posted in the classified section. I would do a search there. Take a bus or plane to Philli and then drive it home.

Get the GS. I just sold my 1993 Q45, and the GS has been the most reliable in the past 2 years.
