My father liked the GS4 I just got. He decided that the quality inside was much better, "tighter," than his SL600. His SL looked awesome: Lorinser body kit, wheels, and even had a couple of chips we put in it (2 chips for the 12 cylinder), but with only 30k miles, it had a broken passenger side armrest/handle (common problem), A/C compressor went, convert. top broke twice, alternator went... So, he is now a proud owner of his own GS400. Yes, my father and I have the same cars. We have always loved Toyotas, and now Lexus.

The year was '94. It hadn't been driven hard. With 30k miles, you know it sat around a lot. However, it doesn't seem reasonable to have a $125K car with those problems. Did I mention it had an oil leak? After my father traded it in, the dealership called him and said it had a pretty bad oil leak. We both loved the SL600. It was fast with the chips (tell your dad to get a chip if its available for the later year models, easy install). But, the cars quality should endure better over time than it did. The GS400 is as fun and enjoyable, without the worries, and my father took a HUGE loss on the trade in to get it. The SL500 is more desirable on the trade-in value. My mothers C280 was also a problem, but that is a whole nother story. Good cars? Well, they lost our trust.
My father put $500 down on the C32 AMG that is coming out. He is probably going to the loss there too as he has recently gained more respect for Lexus, and put $500 down on a SC430. We'll see what happens! God bless Merc., but they are not for us. No hard feelings!
