Hi everyone,
I had my car for almost one year. I love driving it everyday. My car got cut off yesterday at McDonald's drive through. Since then the rpm is at 500 (normally was around 700 to 800 I believe) during the idle after I restarted the car. One of my friends told me that my ECU needs to be reset because the timing is off. Is this the problem? Haven't had a chance to go to the dealer yet. I admit I did drive hard on the road (revved to 6000) before pulling to the McDonald's for some food. Did anyone have similar experiences? Is my friend correct? Any response will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. By the way, I have been visiting this site for past few months. It's great, enjoyed

Default EXACT SAME PROBLEM

with my GS3, i got freaked! what happened is i zoomed it to about 6000RPM then slowed down in first, and it stayed at 3000RPM even when i was stopped, then it dropped so low i thought the engne was off, like 500RPM too! so i turned off the car and reset it, still idled really low. After a few hours it was back to normal though.

I occassionally have the same problem - some times a change in climate will affect the way the engine idles (at least that is what my dad told me, and he's pretty knowledgable with electronic ignitions, ecu, etc.) and the computer needs time to adjust. I get the 500 rough idle and then it will go away a couple hours later. If you still have it for a week straight, take it to the dealer. But if your car is only a year old, I don't see that you should have a big problem.

I have 80k on my GS4, so I kinda expect a little roughness -- but it's still VERY rare.

so having an idle speed of 500rpm all the time is not normal? I have a 2001 GS430 and on the first day I got the car, I felt the RPM was kind of low (my car's idle speed is 500rpm). The dealer said an idle speed of 500rpm is normal. Does anyone elses 2001 GS430 idle at 500rpm?

My GS300 idles at 500 - 600 rpm. This is normal. With Air Con on it will be a little higher.

The rpm is at 600 during idle now. Hopefully, it's normal. It really scared me when my car got cut off at the stop after surging to 6000. The rpm was at highest 500 or lower during idle. I will bring the car to the dealer to check it out anyway, just to make sure.

My GS400 finally did the infamous die out. It was idling at 250-300 RPM. I was about to go at an intersection when I noticed the car was no longer running! It was a bit embarassing to have my 50G Lexus die-out with my japanese-cars-are-junk friend sitting next to me. I believe the airco was off at the time. It seems to idle lower when AC is off. I usually get around 500 with the AC on.
