Replacing Mark Levinson Speakers
I have a 2001 GS300. I'm trying to replace the stock Mark Levinson speakers with the Infinity Kappa. I love the sound of the CMMD driver. However, I'm caught dead in the water now. I got my 5.25" speakers after work and couldn't wait to install them. 11pm at night I opened the back door panel and disconnect 1 speaker.
First Surprise:
The back speakers design is a component design with a 4" driver and a .75" titanium tweeter, not a 5.25 like a normal design.
Second Surprise:
So I figure if I buy a 4" Infinity, it will fit in there, right? Nope. Luckily, I've consulted with my cousin, BananaGS, and he warned about the weird ohm design of proprietary systems like Bose and such. So, I pulled out the ohm meter and, *****, the darn thing got an 8-ohm driver. If, I didn't measure the ohm and just stick the 4-ohm Infinity in there, it would go to hell in no time.
What the heck, back to the OEM system again. The Infinity speakers are going on Ebay. Anybody got a schematic of the ML system? Hopefullly we can figure something out. Or, if anyone has done a speaker-swap of the ML system, please post pics. Thanks.

My suggestion is to spend $10.00 on materials and a Sunday afternoon building your own enclosure:

A few people have followed this DIY with great results

Do you really think the ML system sounds bad? What are you trying to accomplish by replacing the ML speakers with the Infinity speakers? I'll see if I can't help you.

The back speakers are 8-ohm, so swapping speakers are going to be complicated, which might require some rewiring and amp. bypassing... So, I think I'm just going to stick with the stock speakers. The ML system is wonderful. However, I think the stock speakers lack a little in the mid and high so I figure if I could replace the stock paper drivers with the CMMD Kappa drivers, it would be perfect.

I've never heard the ML system, but if its supposed to be anything like their home audio equipment then it will be a little warmer (less ear piercing) than what most people are used to. A lot of high end home audio speakers dedicated to 2 channel sound will be warm, which in return allows to listen to music without listening fatigue (usually caused by really bright and harsh sounds). If you really truly want to replace your speakers, look around on partsexpress.com. They deal in raw drivers for people who want to build their own home speakers, so it won't be hard to find good 8ohm drivers. I would look at companies like Vifa and Scan Speak; they build great speakers and actually build speakers for many of the high-end audio companies. I would also look into the possibility of adding more power to the system; this might help in your lack of mids.
