Checked carfax on GS300, need help
Gettin ready to buy a used1998 Gs300 and decided to check carfax. At around 18,000 miles-MANUFACTURER BUYBACK (LEMON) REPORTED - shows on the report. Car now has 95,000 miles. Looks good, actually really good, comes with OZ 20's already on it. Never drove it though.
Anyone know what this might be or where I can find out exactly. Thanks in advance for any help.

LEMON = STAY AWAY
Even if the car looks okay in all aspects, at one time it was declared a lemon. Since you have no idea what's happened for the past 77K miles since the lemon declaration, there's no reason why you should really buy it (unless it's a REALLY REALLY cheap price).
You can find great deals on other GS's if you're willing to wait.
I think you should wait, IMHO. Good luck to ya.

Can I check with lexus technical support and use the vin # to see what the problem was. It happened early on and it 's been running for almost 80,000 since. The was a factory recal for this year ... something about a faulty sensor that could cause the brakes to engage or something.... could this be it???
Yes the price is vey right. I give him my Acura integra - 1994 w/175,000 miles and 9,500 for the gs and it has 20 inch OZ rims easily worth 2000 alone. Interior and exterior, engine bay .. everything looks better than just good.

It's almost like buying a car with a salvage title due to a huge accident, but everything on the outside looks good. You won't know it, but something will always be there.
I just went on KBB.com and gave you the top of the line 1994 Acura Integra GS-R Sedan loaded up with 175K on the clock. The private party value came up to $3,290.
That means you'd be getting this GS for $3,290 + $9,500 = $12,790. This is considering that you've got the top of the line Integra.
The private party value of the 1998 GS300 is $13,570.
You're saving $780. Again, this is considering that you've got a top-notch Integra.
Seriously, don't go for it.

The car must have had a major problem that the dealer couldn't fix numerous times so the dealer had to buy it back. That's basically what a lemon is. Without knowing what the problem was/is, I would stay away from it.

Just wait -something better will come along. I looked for a few months and drove about 6 gs300s before finally scoring. I got so fed up I went to dealer and almost spent $38000 for a brand new gs3. THE NEXT DAY I found a private owner GS430 with 21000miles for $27000.
What part of FL are you in? I see good deals all the time. Check autotrader.com
I would get something that hasn't been messed with and def no lemon, even when you try to sell it it will haunt you.
Big deal if it's got rims. To me that says it's been ragged.
good luck

The plot thickens....
Cypress called the local Lex dealer and I called Lexus corporate. Neither have any record of the lemon buyback for the car's VIN.
Cypress calls NJ DMV, where the lemon occurred and they have no record of it.
Carfax says yes, Lexus and NJ both say no....
Makes you wonder on the accuracy of the carfax in the first place.
