Here is the quote from 2000 GS Owner's Manual that explains what fuel type should be used and what "premium" means.

"Octane rating
Select premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane
Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher
for optimum engine performance. However, if such
premium type cannot be obtained, you may
temporarily use unleaded gasoline with an Octane
Rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Number 91)."

This is how it goes.

87 - Regular
89 - Plus
91 - Premium

I guess it's because of the Strict Emissions we have here in California
86 - Weasel ****

(sorry - couldn't resist)

You laugh, but 86 octane is available in higher elevations (leaner conditions). 86 actually runs cleaner and than higher octane fuels. I actually have gotten the best mileage with 86 octane fuel (not on a 1UZ or 3UZ) with 1MZ-FE V6 powered vehicles in the Southwest states- AZ,NM,TX.

Do you think you get better mileage becuase the timing is being retarded and the mix is leaner than normal?

But either way it realy isnt about clean burning is it, its really about the ability to resist detonation in our relativley high compression engines.

Default 89 octane..

what exactly are the disadvantages of using a lower octane? i've been consistantly using 89 ever since i bought my gs two years ago. and i don't really feel the difference between 89 and 91

Dude do not switch to the 89, the manual actually says you can use it temporarily but it is not recomended because it will cause detonation. The car will retard timing to prevent the detonation but the net result is a loss of performance and power.
See above for the disadvantages.

I haven't seen anything higher than 94 (Sunoco) either.

In Georgia the highest I have found is 93...so that's what I ride to. When I first got it I put the low octane in (can't remember if it was 87 or 89) and it seemed to run a bit sluggish...maybe it was my imagination. The next fill up I went with 93 and haven't looked back since...

same here in the sf bay area - 91 is our premium and the best we can get. if we had anything higher then i'd put it in since our cars deserve the best.

You're absolutely right. On our way from Austin to San Diego on our annual pilgrimage to my wife's family we see 86 octane in Las Cruces, NM all they way through Tucson, AZ (I believe).
