well i haven't put them side by side, but i have driven a few gs4 (including mine) and the gs430. the 01-03 ls430 were slow... very slow... to the point it's boring. when the 04 came out, i was lucky to get in and do whatever i wanted with it. i floored the car and man was that fast. i am not saying it's a lot faster than the gs430, though.

on paper, they had the 01-03 ls430 to be 6.2 or 6.1 0-60. on the new ls430, it's 5.8. since 98 gs400, i don't think i have seen the gs400 or gs430 rated that anymore

the secret is the 6 speed auto tranny on the 04 ls430. that's pretty much the main drivetrain upgrade for the 04. and it makes the car so damn fast

lexus site says 2001 GS430=5.8 2004 LS430=5.9. It will be interesting to see 6spd in the GS430. Do we know if they are going to a higher rear end gearing to compensate. If third gear and fourth still pull like my second and third now, it will be a rocket!

The cars are a good weight too. Not too heavy. The GSsa are 3650-3750lbs. The LS under 4000lbs. THis helps as well. As does class leading aerodynamics.

A car "feeling" faster than the other does not necessarily mean the car is actually faster than the other.

Fastest GS was the 400 btw 1998 and 2000= 0-60 mph @ 5.7 sec
with the introduction of 430 in 2001 model year time slipped to 5.8 sec

I doubt these fluctuations in Lex qouted times really apply to real world. Prob depends on conditions, tester etc.
I have driven a 2000 GS400 w 30k miles and it felt noticably slower than my 2001 GS430!

Seems like all of the Lexus 400/430 models made since 1998 have all been within 3 or 4 tenths of a second in the 1/4-mile from one to the next. It's really not much difference at all, especially considering how drastically different some of them are and the fact that there are even two different motors too!

honestly Threxx, 3-4 tenths is quite a diff in quarter mile. Each tenth is one car length.
I doubt they vary that much(apples to apples)
I don't see how the Lexus #s fluctuate when nothing changed.

Engine/weight/chassis/suspension/motor/transmission/aerodynamics... all of those factors are a bit different from model to model.

I test drove a 2001 GS430 and the delay from pressing the throttle until the car started to accelerate completely turned me off. It seemed to take forever, but was probably something like a half second. Now when I need to accelerate, for whatever reason I don't want to wait for it to kick in. I was so disappointed I decided I did not even want a GS430 or a GS400.

My wife found a 1999 GS400 on an Acura lot and talked me in test driving it. I was very reluctant to to even bother. Boy was I glad I did. That GS400 took off like I had hoped the GS430 would. I bought the car that night. And 6 months later my wife traded in her 2003 Acura TL S with 5000 miles on it, and now we both have 1999 GS400's. I believe based on my experience that the 400 is faster taking off than the 430.

Now once the 430 gets going it could be faster, that part I'm not so sure of.

3dog-My 430 has no delay, when you hit the gas it pulls. The only delay is when you are taking it easy going through gears it lets off gas a little between shifts.Smooth throttle control can make it un noticable

Threxx-as far as I know there were no engine, aroedynamic, suspension, or weight changes for the GS430 it's entire life, yet the lexus site 0-60 & 1/4 mile numbers vary on the 430 through the years.

I see where the confusion is. I was referring to "all 400/430 models", as in GS, LS, and SC from 98 and above... not just GS.
