I think it is just a matter of semantics. You can usually get a model year in the fall of the previous year. Unless they do something different in the UK, he probably has an 01 model but bought it before 01.

Must be variation in local custom. A new model introduced in Oct/Nov in the US would be classified as being the following year's model.

btw, my gas mileage is HORRIBLE, i drive in stop and go traffic
oh, don't even ask me about my gas mileage with the big wheels and stuff, it's not pretty

the bright side though, after putting on the tc and the lsd, i actually maintain pretty much the same gas mileage!

my GS400 does quite well for a 300hp V8...I am not bothered by the mileage at all

in comparison my rental 04 RX 330 had worse mileage than my 400

Yes it is the same as your 2001 model. Cannot really call it a 2001 in the UK if it is registered in 2000.

Lexus don't call the cars by a year over in the UK, the latest SC and RX are now available which you would call 2005 models but they are just the latest model enhancements in the UK.

Lexus also seem to be changing when they bring out new models or enhancements in the UK towards the middle of the year rather than at the end. Last year the new RX300/330 started selling in the UK in May and the IS had changes this year in April.

The new RX400h will hopefully start shipping in June 2005 but it's going to be called a 2006 model in the US which seem a bit confusing.

Anyway back on topic, my 98 GS300 was about 2mpg better than my 01 GS430

Default 2000 GS 400 MPG figures

City (suburban commuting mix): average speed 34MPH.
22.1 MPG average,

Highway (cruise control):
55MPH = 31 MPG
75MPH = 27.5 MPG
80MPH = 24 MPG

80F to 93F, 34PSI, cruise control as much as possible, A/C on "auto" set to 79F, about speed limit or 5 MPH above speed limit (lots of cops!)

Numbers from NAV trip computer, with resets on long stretches at different speeds... kind of my "hobby" to eek out the last bit of MPG... total "nerd", I know!

This is about my mean average over the past 40,000 miles, relatively level driving in SoCal and in Florida.

I had an ES300 "loaner" from my Lexus dealer with the 6, not only did it feel underpowered vs. the V8, the mileage was the same or worse (maybe I had to "floor" it more to get the same performance/acceleration I was accustomed.) I'll take the V8, please!

Concerning gas tanks: the most gas I've ever put into my car "on fumes" is a little over 17 gallons...

Just be sure to get it thoroughly inspected and smogged before you hand over the check. But that is a pretty good deal, especially in cali where prices for cars like the GS are inflated.

that sounds like a pretty good price, congrats on the car. just to be safe, take the car for smog and probably to a mechanic to make sure there is no leak or anything

TLW, you stated that the gas tank is the same size for all when responding to this quote above, but I have a 2002 GS430 that only took 16.2 gallons when my ML trip info stated I only had 13 miles left in the tank. That would lead me to believe that the tank is significantly less than 19.8 gallons. What am I missing?

all of them are the same, around 19 gallons. they all just play safe and tell you to get gas sooner. you dn't want to run really empty, it can damage the fuel pump, a lot of bills there. so the gas light and nav they always tell you sooner.

Default I GUESS YOU ARE RIGHT

The fuel guage on this last 99 GS4 of mine seems to read a bit more optomistic than the other one. With this car, the needle will first start to move off the full mark at about 40 miles, which is unusual to me.

I called the dealership, and was told that the fuel sender(S) may be out of calibration. I was told that there are 2 in the tank...forward and rear, and they average between the two to give the reading we see on the guage.

They are about $90 dollars each, plus labor to replace. I was quoted $150.00 to check it out, so I decided for now to just keep the tank full.

My experience with the GS 300 and GS 400 has shown me very little difference between the two in terms of fuel economy. The 300 has to be pushed a little harder to get going, and the 400 gets pushed because...its' a 400, and no other reason is needed.

I get 14 to 17 mpg in the city and 25 to 27 on the road with this one.

well i read somewhere that a lot of times, the gas guage isn't linear anymore nowadays. it usually drop a bit quick in the beginning and the slow, and indicate empty earlier than the real case is
