Why should I pick the GS300 over these other cars?
I plan on purchasing one of these used cars. I'm leaning towards the GS300 because the parts don't cost as much as the German cars.
97 528/540
96 E320 (I do not want a 430)
98 GS300/GS400

Let me break this down for you..
Handling...BMW takes the gold!
Interior...Lexus hands down
Exterior...Lexus again
Reliability....Uh huh you guessed it, Lexus
Power...540 has a lot of juice to play with. BMW wins this category..
So the final score is BMW: two first place finishes, MB: zero Lexus: three first place finishes.
Pound for pound, your getting more car for your money with the Lexus. Go for it!

96 E320 has 4-speed auto I believe and that thing sucks.
If 5 series is 540 then the power would be great. If 528, a 98 or 99 GS300 should be equally fast if not faster. (personally raced 528i auto and I took a very slim lead)
like everyone said, 5 series wins in handling. Everything else from interior and quality to reliability, the GS300 wins hands down.

I would definitely go Lexus for reliablity. Those German cars you have listed are around 8 years old now! You will be looking at big bucks for repairs.
Also for what it is worth a co-worker of mine had a E320, new in '99. I drove it about 50 miles once and I was very dissapointed in it. Comfort, noise, vibration, and power was all lacking. The only good thing about it was that it felt solid, but that was it. He ended up getting rid of it after only two years, he was that dissapointed in it. By the way I was in Germany last summer and all the taxi cabs are E320's! That give you a clue as to how they rank in their home country, it's like a ford crown vic here!! Ok but nothing special at all.
The 5 series bmw is a good looking car, but the interior is really bad compared to the lexus. Check them out side by side and you will see.

which one?
I like all three and think they're great cars. It boils down to whats important to you. For me reliability is job one. That means the lexus.
Two is legroom. I believe the benz wins there.
Three is comfort. All three provide comfort in varying degrees but close to equal.
Last is which looks best after it's modded. All three are equal there too. I'm not into gadgets and unnecessary tech toys in a car. Looks like the lexus wins for me.
You need to determine what you want most in a car. Every car will need repairs but my experience owning a benz and friends owning bimmers...I wouldn't buy one of those used without a certification program as good as lexus. Probably still wouldn't. Got better things to do than visit service departments all the time.

of the three, first of all, i think the mb is a no brainer to go. it has no power and no handling imho, so forget it. the bimmer has all the handling, it's good. lack of power but same with the gs3 anyway. the gs3 has the comfort you want, not much power, and handling is not good. the maintenance of the gs3 is sooo much lower than that of the bimmer, that's a big plus specailly you are going with used car. plus, if you want to mod the car, the parts for the gs3 is a lot cheaper as well
also, if you look at the price, if you want to get comparable options for both the gs3 and the bimmer, you will pay more for the bimmer, something i dont' exactly understand why
