But don't know anything about it to know what year is good and what mileage I should be considering.
A local dealer has a silver one with all the goodies minus NAV for $34K advertised price ('98 GS 400 with 43K miles w/ 3-year warranty).
Can I, should I look for a better deal than this?
Also, what kind of suspension mods are good to ease up the body roll and brake dive on this beautiful car?
Thanks, guys. Phat ride you got.

I found my GS 400 online at the lexus.com. I looked under the certified Lexus, and searched all over the California. And the result, I got my car at the whole sale price in one of the dealers in California.(Southbay Lexus, Torrance CA)
Based on your price, it is basically retail price. Send the dealer a email and request for a special online price. Most of time the dealer will lower the price at least a thousand right there, then you will find a good starting point to negotiate even more.
By the way, I almost bought a A6 2.7T. My local dealer let me take the car out for one day test drive. I think it is a totally awsome car! It runs as smooth as GS 400, and almost as fast. The only thing stopped me buying it was the reliability rating from the Consumer Report. How is your S4 running?

I would definitely prefer to go private party to save more on price and cut out the tax issue, but wondering if that would be smart. Are these GS 400s reliable enough to risk not having a factory warranty? i'd get a three year warranty if i bought a certified used one.
my S4 is running perfectly. 10K miles and no probs. running 5-5.1s.... and 13 flat 1/4s. 325hp/370lbsft.

Go for an extended warranty company... or you can get an extended Lexus warr. if the car is still within the factory covered miles on the car...
Lexus are great cars no doubt.. I like your M3 killer too..

AS4,
in general, the gs are all very good since its intro in 98. but if you want to be really critical, either find a certified gs, or when buying from a private party, try to get all the service records, and make sure all the factory service bulletin calls are been performed.
here are your pricing ref baased from s.calif:
98 certified 25-30k miles $32-34k
99 certified ~20k $35-37.5k
00 cert ~10k $40k
just deduct a few thousand for a private sale. Unless it's in tip-top shape, like one of our fellow member, Juan C from Texas, and maybe with an extended warranty.
the one you mentioned i would consider reasonablly good buy at $30-31k since it has no nak/ nav, and is at 43kmiles.
suspension-L-tunes combo, slight drop drop yet effective
or, yu can get the Eibach+Bilstein combo for a little more aggressive(0.25" more drop) handling behavior. let me lknow if you want the bilsteins, i have helped several members in getting Bilsteins at GREAT deals. you can simply Private Message me.
add the trd sway bars, and the chasis braces if you are still not satisfied.

Thanks Will and to the others who responded with insight.
I just test drove the silver one today. It didn't have anything on it. No 17s, no Nak, no HIDs, no spoiler. Was pretty disappointed. in seattle, i'm looking at 34K retail for a 43K car. Way too high from what you S Cali people are getting them for. I would think they'd be cheaper in seattle than LA.
