Unhappy would you wonder about a new paint job on a used Gs400?

A gal my wife works with bought a one owner 2000 GS400 last week. It was supposedly a trade in. She is going thru an Acura dealer which also owns a local Lexus dealership.

The used car salesman told my wifes friend that it was originally the Cinnabar color but that the owner wanted it to be a more red color and repainted it just because he had lots of money.

Would anyone be suspicious of this? I don't know what a new paint job goes for, but i can't imagine anyone shelling out thousands of dollars for a new paint job unless it had been wrecked. I don't think she ever did a car-fax on it either.

So far my wife hasn't seen the car. Apparently the navigation system wasn't working and getting it fixed was part of the deal to buy it. It is supposed to be done on monday

Oh, the soap opera part of this is the gal is now dating the used car salesman.

Do you guys think the paint is hiding something?

I don't have access to the car. It was already bought by my wifes friend. I just don't think it smells right.

oh well

too late buyer beware unless they have a return policy

BTW why didnt she have a mechanic check it out before she bought it

i know there are services where they check the car out for a fee

dont know what else to say

and yes i would be a little worried about a USED car dealer telling me that

they would say anything to move product

and now since shes dating him they realtionship might be over if he pulled a fast one on her

Obviouly she is to trusting
That just blew my mind. That seems like it should be against the law to date a used car salesman. I don't know the gal but I sense she must be desperate!

Thanks for the input
This new paint job just doesn't add up.

I'm sure that someone on Club Lexus must have painted their GS just because they felt like it, but I for one haven't seen that post.

Probably if they get a new kit or something.... But I don't think anyone would repaint their stock car for nothing.

well, what if the car had scratches and paint chips that he wanted to get it painted? You never know unless you look for vin #'s as T.L.W says. Check all the parts that you think might be replaced to see if the vin # match your car.

Thats what i'm planning to do once summer hits. I got couple scratches and rock chips on my hood.

personally, unless i know the previous owner, i hardly really trust the sales.... they do everything to sell the car anyway. it could very well be a person who has too much money to repaint the car, but you never know for sure right?

in any case, it's too late

I'm not rich and I still repaint my cars... seriously! I might be taking my car in next week to get it repainted! but then this time its b/c of my kit. If you bought it from a used dealership they usually would not buy a car that is in bad condition unless they got scammed and chances of a dealership letting themselves get scammed is slim.

personally, I do not like cinnabar and thats only my opinion. If I had that color I would probably repaint it as well.

would it make you feel any better if I told you I didn't like the blue's just as much as the cinnabars? I've never owned a vibrant colored car and I dont think I ever will.

A little off topic, how much would a full car paint job go for? For top of the line, its around 5k-8k?
