So my 1998 GS is in the body shop and I have the option to request the old style taillights or the new style taillights since they will cost about the same from the dealer.

I know a lot of you like the newer taillights but WHY? I kinda like the older style's segmented look - it reminds me of the light configuration of a bmw.

Cost not a factor... which would you guys choose?

Personally the 01+ looks much more classier. I would go with those.

Sometimes its tough to say 'why' you like the way something looks compared to something else... it's all subjective. Those of us who had the GS before the GS430 came out probably mentally equate the newer style tails with newer GSs to some extent.

I personally like the way the new ones look in the day time, and prefer the way the old school lights look in the night (more distinctive).

I like the way the 01+ tails look because it's associated with "newer model". However, when I first purchased the car, I had NO idea that the lights were different. I couldn't even tell until I saw some side by side pics.

So, to your average Joe, they'll look the same. It's just YOUR preference. If I had a choice, I would pick the 01+ just because they're NEWER.

I bet if 80% of modded GS owners on CL decides that the 98 - 00 lights are better here on CL, I bet a new trend will start.....and everyone would want 98 - 00 lights. It's just supply & demand.

Here's what you should do. Print out that pic that Dave put together and show it to your co-workers, friends & family members and see which the would prefer (well, first see if they can spot "what's unusual" about the pic w/o you telling them that the tail lighs are different). This way, you'll get an honest opinion.....not a CL opinion (if that matters to you).

For me the 01+ has a cleaner look. Being that almost the entire light is red. Again, it boils down to preference. You stated that you like the old lights because of the segments, I like the newer lights because it just looks cleaner.

haha yeah, you sure you can't get them to pay you for the jp tails?

i love the 01+ one so much more than the 98-00. being a older style isn't the problem, but i think the 01+ taillights flow so much better with the rest of the car. it complements the inner taillights a lot more imho. the gs is a smooth curvy car, so having too much "strong" lines make it a bit off imho. that's why the 01+ taillights stand out more for me

Even if insurance would let him get the JP tailights, it would take a very long time till they came. hehe. Unless insurance would pay for airmail. haha

I've always preferred the '98-'00 tails. First time I saw the '01 tails at work, the first comment out of my mouth was "Reminds me of Acura tail lights" Though I've seen some accords with the same style lights as the '98-'00 tails, I still feel that nothing beats the "Original" Why pretend your car is something it's not. The only thing that would even make me consider updating my tails is if it were the Junction Produce tails. But I just cann't justify the $1300 price tag for a set of tail lights. Donn't get me wrong, I fully understand and appreciate what the process is to clear out those '01 tails. I guess what it boils down to is personal prefference. Get the taillights that you like the best, not the lights that everyone thinks you should get. Its your car not ours.

01+ all the way. I am with Henry on the flow. The front has the quad headlights. With the new tails, the circular imprint in the tail lights continues that theme better than the pattern of the older tails. Even though, it is already quad tails, the shapes just flows better with the 01+.
