Default Navigation Questions

Looking into buying a GS400 and so my questions are.. the ones that do come with a navigation package.. Do they need any type of service in order for the GPS to work? I know that the 99's have a hd based system in them.. when did it change to a DVD system? oh and lastly the HID's. when were they available.
Thanks in advance

No service required except periodic updates (optional), Lexus issues updates every 18-24 months, 98-00 is HD based, DVD was introduced in 2001, HID's or Xenons were optional on all GS 300 400 until 2001 when they became standard on GS430, they remain optional on the GS 300.

that "warranty" is lifetime, provided the previous owner(s) didn't take advantage of the upgrade.....and these 2 free upgrades were from HD based navi, NOT DVD

I got my free update recently, but sadly the second will go to no use as they stopped makin HD upgrades

haha a lot of questions and answers here, so let me just chime in a bit

first of all, you never have to pay anything for nav. you pay to get them in your car and that's it. that's why i think it's superior compared to stuff like on-star. i think it's kinda silly to pay annual fee for that.

regarding the upgrade, from 98-00 it's hdd base and 01+ are dvd. so for hdd base, you can upgrade the hdd to better info. for dvd base, you basically get the new dvd disc to upgrade the system. i believe for 98 -99 they have free upgrade once if you have warranty, but since then, there is no such thing anymore. so now if you get a car with nav, you either get new dvd next time or just stay with yours. usually though, unless you live in rural area, the dvd should be enough. for example i don't plan on getting another dvd disc upgrade

for the usage, the nav always work, whether the car is parked (still running) or moving. but you can only punch in new addresses and stuff when the car is in park. that's safety feature
