Observation re gs400/430 gas mileage
I know there is a separate thread already on what gas mileage everyone gets, but I have an interesting (and probably obvious) observation on how to improve it. I commute to work everyday approximately 30 miles each way, 29 of which are highway miles. My commute is the "reverse" commute, i.e., against the flow of traffic, so there is never any traffic and cars are pretty much flying. The speed limit is 55, but if you're going 70, you're getting passed. Anyway, I would normally chug along at 75. I know the GS400 is supposed to get around 23 mpg on the highway, but I never got more than 20, and I couldn't understand why. So for my last tank of gas, I decided to slow it down a bit and average around 65 mph (which equates to about 2100 rpm, as opposed to 2700 rpm at 75 mph). Anyway, today I filled up my tank and was pleasantly surprised to see that I averaged 22 mpg on this last tank, an improvement of about 2 mpg. Just thought I'd share.

I'm pretty sure that big increase in gas mileage dropping from 75 down to 65 is the case with most vehicles.
I've decided that if I want/need a V8, then I can't be too concerned with gas mileage. I just hammer it down the highway when I feel like it and try to smile at the gas pump........................
If the mileage really bothers you, they'd probably give you a good trade at a Toyota dealership on a Tercel or a Corolla.................................

My best gas mileage on my 99 GS4 is close to 25MPG but on longer freeway drips without traffic jam . The current cold midwest temperature also won't help the MPG.

I believe manufacturer MPG is determined by driving at 55 or 65, but who drives that slow unless they have too? That's why some of us have higher gas consumption.
Just like you, I noticed the difference in speed affects MPG, but I just can't stand driving 65.

My personal best driving from SLC to Denver via the hills of Wyoming on I-80 averaging 80mph and few 6%+ uphill grades at 110mph on a full tank of 91 octane Chevron 100% gas with Techron 28.3mpg
I average 19mpg in the city using Costco 90% gas, 10% who knows here in Denver.

Has anyone checked their computer (info button) while cruising at diff hwy speeds? I have on occasion and actually saw higher numbers, approx. 24mpg at 70 mph vs. about 22mpg at 65 mph. I thought this was a good reason to keep at a higher sppeed.

When I had the 3.76 LSD installed, I saw 19-19.5 using the Info button. Now that I am running stock gearing I see an average of 27-28. On a LONG 400 mile drive today I averaged 28-30 according to the same computer. This with a average speed of 80mpg with really quick spurts to 155mpg (the limiter)-hit it 4 times today. Not sure if the MPG numbers are accurate, but my wallet is feeling much heavier these days. The accepted 1-2 mpg loss installing the 3.76 is very low from what I can judge. Also keep in mind that it does not take much effort for me to reach the speeds I used to drive when not S/C. So I may be saving there as well.
