I'm curious guys, I've been seeing 1998 GS400's go around in the low $20,000 range? For me it seems that the GS should have a better resale value. Heck, the 1998 GS300 won't top 20g's?!

Then I see 1995-1996 M3's go well over $20,000.

I dunno too much about the resale value of E430's or 540's, though I believe its higher than the GS's.

Man, I wish I lived near you!

By me, (98) GS400's still go for at least $30K, and generally quiet a bit higher.

I do notice that there is not that big of a difference between the GS300 and GS400 used though. Perhaps a grand or 2 more for the 400, but that is nothing compared to the $8,000 when new.

Even in Dallas, GS's run pretty cheap. 1998 GS400s with avg miles (40k) are good for about $28k, and with 50k miles for about $26k. And 98 GS300s with 40k miles run close to $22k, with the 98 GS300s with 50k miles and over running from $18k and up ! However, the ones I am talking about aren't lexus certified, its usually $5k more for just that !

I say if you can get a fully loaded good-color (white, black, silver, gold) 98 GS400 with 50k miles for about $26k then that's a good deal.

A GS4 with 70k miles even go for less than $24k !

And we know that Lexus lasts ! I don't know why they sell so cheap.

Geez, why is it selling so cheap? I mean, I bought my car brand new for like 50g's and now if I'm lucky I can only get half my money if I sell it.

The prob is, I want to get a new GS, so I have two solutions.

1)Get the GS430 with the ML/NAV combo. Spectra Blue

2)Wait till 2003 for the redesign GS. Though I dunno if I can last that long and wondering how much my GS will be worth then ?! 15k!?

3)OR- keep my GS, cuz I did already install all my Alpine stuff.. Just got TV's in my headrest and it would be a ***** to sell my car cuz I have to take all my Alpine stuff down . Gonna need it for my new GS.

Before I was leaning towards keeping my GS4 and buying little add-ons that the GS430 has. Cuz I don't think there is a drastic difference between the GS4 and 430. Only cosmetic mostly.

Talk about confused.

Resale price for Lex is just too low, almost worthless after 4 years or so In AutoWorld (Chinese car magazine) most of the '97 528 with 58k mile still sells for $30,000!! And for Benz even higher, 98 C280 for $27,000. and 98' E320 still goes for $34,000.

Compare to the Benz, the GS almost has no value what so ever after 4 years. Lexus needs to do something about it so our cars don't drop in value that much. Like extending redesign intervals from 3-4 years to 6-9 years will certainly help.

Actually, I don't agree with lexus having a low sale value..at least not here in the bay area. Here are my thoughts: When I was shopping for a car back in 11/00, I originally gonna buy either a used 528i/540i, E320/E420, or GS3/GS4. And when I came across the prices, a 97/98 528i, 97/98 E320 and 98 GS3 were all going for similar pricing, low 30k and with mileage anywhere from 20k to 40k mi. Pricing were also similar for the higher models. HOWEVER, consider the price when it was brand new: E320: close to 50k, a base model with nothing more than a sunroof, 528i: 46k with just a premium package, GS3: 43k with the premium package. And remember, BMW and Benz don't negotiate much so the actual purchase price came alot closer to the sticker than lexus. For me, I ended up buying a 01 GS3 with premium package for $37,900. Of course, these prices are dated back 11/00, and with dot-coms going down here in the Bay area, luxury cars are much more negotiable. Well, what's my point? The purchase price of a brand new Lexus is much less compare to bmw and benz while it retains similar resale value..well at least for the bay area.

I totally agree with DAVE on this issue.

BTW, Dave, do you still want the BILSTEINS COD?

D-man,
you bought one of the best sedan on earth. and if you have $$ for the toys and REALLY like them, go for them. in theseday and age, there are always new cars and toys come out frequently for us BIG BOYS. just access you own taste and situation and to enjot the finest things in life.

To all fellow members,

if it weren't for the arrival of lexus since 1989, we would still be looking at BENZ and BMW cars with stiff prices, poor quality, and often rude services.

for the GS in the low $20k D-man mentioned, how is the condition? my carwash manager once asked me to see if i want to get a'98 e-class cheap? the car was so ill-taken care, i would not even want to sit in it.

while it might be true that some 5 series and e-class are asking a lot for their used cars( they cost more $$$$ in the first place), would you guys actually want to buy something like that? if you have have saved over $5k at the beginning, of course the price will be less for the used ones. the question is: which one is more reliable and cost less for repair?

99-00 540I ~$45-48k
99-00 E430 ~same or,

brand new 01 GS430 premium pkg for $45600+fees, any color, best quality and customer services on the planet.
to me, this is truly a NO BRAINER.

Question

Man I wish I lived near some of you too if they are going that cheap. Around here (Chicagoland area) I've seen 98s in upper 30K range. Those were all nice cars with decent mileage though.

I'm pretty confident on the GS value staying up in the long term.

Peter

Gs4will, davezaristo..

I never thought about it like that ! Come to think of it does make some sense that the msrp of GS's is less than both bmw's and MB so for the resale value it would of course be a little less.

Default ...trade-off

...Well if you want the GS or any other Lexus to retain a higher resale value then I guess Toyota/Lexus should ease down on the production to decrease the market supply.

If Toyota/Lexus tones down supply, that will raise the prices on the New end of the equation also. Which means you'll be paying sticker or OVER sticker (like the SC430)...

Screw that! I prefer buying new cars and I'd rather get a good deal on the new end and not worry about the resale value. Everyone knows going into it that the resale value on almost any car sucks bigtime. Besides, I find the resale value of the Lexus cars in Los Angeles to be pretty good. Benzes and Bimmers sell for a BIGGER loss in this area because there are TONS of them (just look in the local AutoTrader or AutoBuys). I see E320's going from the Mid 20's to low 30's...same as a GS300, yet the E320 cost more when new...

Besides, with low resale value, it allows used buyers to get a good deal on a great car.

So what states have 98 and up GS's in the Low 20's? I might have to visit!

cars are something to provide convenience and enjoyment. new cars tend to get hit more on depreciaiton the first 2 years. but the ownership and enjoyment is something that is difficult to measure.

with the gs or any lex, brand new or used, buyers are getting their money's worth for one of the best quality sedans. i see tons of 2000 beemer 528s w/~10k miles at ~$37k. but do they sell, not really. that is why the 4.9% financeing from bmw. for the price, i would get a NEW gs3 in any color i want.

a friend of mine got a mb e320 for $49k otd and he is so proud; for the same price, i would get a new gs430w/premium and smile at him every time i fly pass him.

lex are great cars, new or used, i would just enjoy them as much as i can.
