I just don't think you can say the M5 is tuned. What does that mean? It has an engine built in a BMW plant, just as the GS has an engine built by Toyota. The E55 engine is used in many Mercedes models, not just the E55. Tuned would mean they take a factory engine and add blowers or cams, etc.

If the end up building an M3 sedan, it will quickly move to the top of the list as it is already offered with a sequential transmission.

Also, let's wait until Lexus actually offers a "GS500" before you conclude the M5 and E55 would eat its dust. An M5 with a catback exhaust ran a 12.9 at some strip in Texas. Usually, aftermarket exhausts do nothing for an M5 other than make a bit more noise. I am sure Toyota could build a similar engine but they haven't yet.

Lastly, count on it being a normally aspirated engine. Toyota and BMW have very similar philosophies when it comes to engine design. Also, I think Toyota will not want to use a blower when Nissan has 345hp without one.

Question Why not M5/E55?!

The M5 and E55 aren't aftermarket-tuned autos. If you follow the path of excluding the M5 and E55 because the manufacturers' own tuners worked on them, you would also have to exclude cars like the Audi S4, the Acura TL Type S, any Ford SVT car, Dodge R/T car, etc., and that's just silly...

KKelly and SCWell72 are RIGHT !

Those cars aren't "aftermarket-tuned", therefore they SHOULD be included. We just have to admit that the M5 & E55 are faster in stock form !

And ofcourse the JAG also. But isn't the M5 ONLY manual? and therefore can't be counted in the "automatic list"? Like I said before, we need to make a fastest/quickest car automatic list and then a manual list also, and cars can be included in both lists.

I never mentioned the word "aftermarket" did I?

Then we should also include those Nismo tuned R33 Skyline sedans which does 0-60 in around 4 sec.

It'll definitely be the best SPEED for the BUCKS but if you take into consideration the interior components such as luxury and other things, then it's just average. If it's more luxury and has lotsa gadgets then that's another thing.

But the WRX wasn't designed to be luxurious anyways.....

Still GS400/430, are the kings of their league, aint no argument about it.

540/E430 only can eat its dust.

sure if you take into consideration only automatics, that are not the top of the line produced by car manufacturers (amg //m). But also realize then you have limited your vision to a very few cars. might as well also say cars that start with the letter G and end with the number 0. the thread is named "GS400 - 3rd fastest 4 door in the world", and that is misleading, because that implies to many cars out there, tuned by aftermarket and such. but if you wish to talk about luxury 4 doors, then i would say 4th (m5,e55,xjr,gs400). If you wish to say automatics, which may be understandable, then 3rd (e55,xjr,gs400). If you wish to cross analyze that with price, then maybe 1st. But that's the only fair way i can see it. And no where is price implied in the thread subject.

//M is right. We can't count price in this thing, but we HAVE TO leave off the super-extreme-tuned cars like I have stated over and over again. It has to be ALL STOCK, and you CAN count the M5, E55 AMG, and if there was a GS400 sport (4 door) or whatever, we could have counted it too, but Lexus hasn't made one yet.

//M's list is right, the M5, then the E55, then the XJR, and then the GS400, making the GS4 4th, NOT 3rd.

BUT, the reason why I stated that the GS400 was third in the first place because I was only counting automatics (should have put that in the title of this thread).

I don't know how to drive a manual, yet, therefore, an M5 is no use for me !

And when you do count the automatics only, then the GS4 does come in third.

1. MB E55
2. Jag XJR
3. GS400

and with that said. if i have lots of money that i dont know what to do with (aka single ), and didnt care about interior luxury and ONLY about speed, and a bit of snootiness, i'd get the e55. If i wanted to get the best all around car, and well priced, id get the gs400 hands down, if i wanted to be a mac daddy, id get the xjr. no question, the gs400 kicks *** in everyday life for so many of the right reasons (this coming from a bimmer owner). But if you can sort of live with some drawbacks to attain a higher enthusiastic level, then the e55 and m5 come into play imo.

If you don't care about Luxury and only about speed, then shouldn't the WRX be the better choice? By going E55 or M5 there is still ALOT of luxury compared to other sports sedans.

Or if NO LUXURY AT ALL, a pure sports car?

yeh your right, i didnt mean no luxury at all, i mean more pampered, which is what i think the gs400 does better then the e55. your point holds true. I got my m5 knowing that it was not as pampering as the gs400 also, gave a little, got a little.

if interior luxury is not your top priority then M5 is a good choice. I like the GS because the interior is very nice. Interior is one of my top priorities, sometimes even more important than the exterior.
