Timing Belt

Posted before, but searching is hard, so:
My dad checked my mom's LS400 belt at 75k, and it showed no wear, so he didn't change it.
He checked it again at 150k, and it still showed now wear, but he replaced it anyway. Of course, the '90 LS400 was a noninterference engince, so the cost of failure would have been minimal.
Such is not the case with our sexy engines.

I purchased my 98 GS400 with 98,000 miles on it, original timing belt.
Well..... I planned on replacing the belt myself....... soon........ but I did not get around to it until 133,000 miles.
I have driven my GS hard on the old belt. When I inspected the old belt after removal, I was pleasantly surprised that it appeared to still be in good condition. None of the teeth were damaged in anyway. The back had hairline cracks that were on the surface only., this appears to be just normal wear.
Would I recommend for you to go that long...... no!
I would recomment that you replace the water pump at that time, as the labor to just get to the pump is high.

Also, as the belt degrades, fibers from the belt start coming off and collect under that plastic cover. It would appear as a fuzzy film. These are definate signs of wear. Change it soon.
Btw, correct me if I'm wrong. On the engines with VVT-i, if the belt breaks, yes you could still bend some valves. Thats why the factory recommends that the T-belt be replaced at 90k. It would also be recommended that the water pump, and the front crank seal be replaced at the same time, since the front of the engine is already appart. Have fun inspecting your T-belt.

Hey Will
Do you make the same recommendations for the GS400? And if it is different what do you recommend?
My 2 cars are at 62 & 63 K right now.
Thanks

Yes, the T-belt on the V8s should also be replaced at 90k. As noted, to save time and money, you should replace the water pump and front crank seal at this time also. Another thing you should have them check while its appart are the idler and tensioner pulleys for the timing belt. If they make noise when you spin them then they should be replaced also.
