Question

Maybe I shouldn't say cheap?

Lately I've been doing lots of search on classifieds2000.com and traderonline.com for used GS300's and Ive' found a ton with less then 30k miles for under $30k!!! WTF? Is this a pretty average $ for these cars? Sorry I really don't know much about them, just trying to get a ballpark figure of how $ to save. I used to be really into 3 series bimmers, but looks like I've found something else :P

Should I be aware of anything suspecious if I found say a 98-99 GS300 with 24k miles for $27? Becuase I'm finding tons of greats deals like that on here!!!

try it. go to www.classifieds2000.com and look for a GS under $30k or www.traderonline.com. I Gaurentee you'll find a nice handful!!

Even found a couple GS400's with less then 30k miles for around $30k? WTF

Is something fishing?

wow, pretty amazing deals. They're all 98 though. And maybe the condition on them isn't so good. But that one GS for 24K is a heck of a deal from the looks of it. Maybe it once belonged to a drug dealer and got impounded. Maybe not. Good deal anyway.

Default VERY REASONABLE

Mike and everyone,

all the prices i have seen are quite fair. lex retain ~55-60% value after 3 years. it also depends on conditions, and sellers situations. bargain DOES NOT usually bad. you just need to do your research. if buying from private party, get carfax, have tech guys inspected, and go to dealers for maintenance report.

GS are luxury and expensive cars. but if you look at the % in depreciation, they are not too bad. i like to think of them as "bargains" for the potential buyers. my 1st gs was a 94 gs300, bought it @15kmiles for $30k in 95, sold it in 98 for $18.5k w/95k miles, the car still rocked. with all the fun and girls i had in it, that is why i am a lex man for life.

like i said, the prices you found are reasonable. cars are not "investment". i tried to introduce a doctor friend of mine to a 99 gs300 w/25kmiles for $29500. but then i also told him the new one w/preimum can be had for $38.5k+fees. he said immediately that he would take the NEW one for only ~$9k more.

it is good that mike is willing to give our beloved gs a try. and i am certain at this price level, mike will be pleasantly surprised.

Mike,

good choices.

take a goo dlook at the 2nd and third(the 1 u like) ones on your list. the 2nd one is 00 modew/~7k miles. have the dealer or any good tech guy look at it. it looks like new. also pay attention to all the whiteVIN stickers that appear on all door panels, trunk, and under the hood. if they are missing, chances are the panel has been repalced due to fender bender.

the white one is from a lex dealer, and if itis lex certified car, you are half-way there for safety inspection.

Thanks William,

Yeah, I think I might have turned into a Lex. guy? But don't qoute me on that. I used to be a huge bimmer guy, but with these prices etc... how can you go wrong? But then again, I don't really care for any other Models. ES,LX,RX are Fugly IMHO. But the SC,IS are ok and the GS is BAD ASSED!!!

Right now I have a 90 300zx. And it's still got great $ for a 11 yr old car. Still holding a value over $10k. Guess this car is spoiling me? that's why when I see used GS this cheao I get blown out of my seats.

How are the maintence routines on these cars? Pretty $? Are the GS models notoiously known for any mechanical failure etc..?

D-MAN,

What-Z-Up.....

Mike,

the fact that you are(were) w beemer guy and is willing to give the gs a try says a lot in my book.

lex, in general, ARE reliable. my experience has been great, that is why i am on my 3rd-very addicitve. the only complain on my 1st gs was the skipping of CD changer, and it was replaced under warranty. i am a picky guy.

maintenance is relatively inexpensive until you hit 60kmiles. but then again, i am certain you know that german cars cost more than the japanese cars in maintenance.

i would seriously lookt at the white one from lex dealer and the gold one w/7k miles.

like you said, w/these prices, how could you go wrong.
good luck and welcome.

Seriously! I'm actually thinking of getting and SUV since they are cheap right now, it would be a crime not to.

i hear that. when i got my GS3 last January it was worth about 18 G's...i looked it up a couple of weeks ago and it's down to 10...

i've been thinking of rollin' in an SUV especially with the nasty snow storm MI had about a week ago.

i dunno if any of you guys have owned SUV's yet but take it from me from experience (1999 ML430), it's awesome in bad weather (Fonz doesn't have to worry about it), but honestly dan me and you both see probably similar amounts of snow time (late nov-mid feb). So bascially any time after ~3.5 months, all you get is storage space and horrible gas mileage. Don't get me wrong I loved the truck, i loved the system I put in it and the power and the space, but it's really just not worth it.

I've switched back and forth between BMW and Lexus myself. Traded in my E36 for a new Lexus, then dumped another Lexus years later for an E46, then traded that back in for my GS430. The BMW was great, but the trunk in the E46 was too small.

Anyway, I personally don't think $25-$28K for a 98-99 GS300 is cheap. I think that is rather pricey. My 03 GS430 only cost me $20K. Granted it did have more mileage than 30K miles, but still I've seen 98-2000 GS400s with 50K miles going for $25K for the last couple of years. With a car like the GS, there is virtually no difference between 30K miles and 59K miles.

From my experience with BMW and Lexus, both have things that tend to go wrong with them. The key difference is with Lexus, you have a pretty good idea when those common problems will come about and it is easy to do preventative maintenance a head of time. With the BMW, you know what problems will eventually occur, but they often can happen at anytime even at lower miles.

CK6Speed, look at when the thread was made (2001). At that time, a 1999 GS300 with 24K miles for $27K was considered cheap.
