Default 90K Service - Thoughts?

What I plan on having Lexus do...

timing-belt
water pump
crank seal
spark plugs
drain and fill trans fluid
drain and fill coolant
change rear diff. fluid
brake fluid flush

What do you guys think? Should I do aftermarket plugs myself? Torquemasters?

Sounds like the standard 90K service. I have had it done a few times and credit it for my cars longevity. Can't help you with the aftermarket questions as my dealer has done all my 90K services.

FWIW...

I've usually let the jiffy lubes of the world do the following:

Tranny: I bring in the Toyota Fluid - they charged $50 for the service
Radiator: $50
Diff: $25
Brake Fluid: I only do it when the brakes are being done.
Sparks: I do myself

The dealership prices for the tranny, radiator and diff. were substantially higher than what my trusted neighborhood jiffy lube was charging.

My 90K is coming up as well. I suspect I'll have an independent mech. do my timing belt and water pump.

Crank seal? Huh?

Good luck,
Eric

Will do. Tampa Bay Lexus is real overpriced... So I might also get a quote from the one in Clearwater.

The Lexus dealership in Sarasota is also overpriced. I take my car to the local Toyota dealership and they treat my car like gold. I have never had a problem with them

Default 90k Service

I just had my 90k service at JM Lexus.

Something to note:

TIMING BELT CHANGE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 90K SERVICE.

Although you should change your timing belt at 90k for 1998-1999 model years.

It is extra $300 or so ..and while they are in there have them change the water pump. Will save you $$ in the long run so they do not have to go back in their twice and charge you for labor.

Just my 2 cents.. And the other member is right in going to a Toyota dealership. Both Toyota and Lexus dealers can service your car.

Looks like a good list. I'm at 87k myself so I will be getting mine done in the near future. I never thought about the crank seal and I bet that adds big $$$ to the price.

One thing I would look at also is getting the fuel injection system and throttle cleaned. I was having a problem with my car not wanting to fire every once and awhile and after Lexus ran some fuel injection cleaner and cleaned out the throttle, it runs good as new (maybe even a small increase in power!!). It ran me about $200 which isn't cheap for that but when you consider that some independent garage might spend a couple extra hours trying to track down the problem and possibly mis-diagnosing it, it's all worth it

Also check your ball joints if you haven't. I'm getting mine done at 90k, although my car was originally from New York (rough roads) so yours might not need it yet.

They are owned by the same company I believe. stay away. We Lexus guys need to find us a good guy around town.

Where did you install your L-tuned shocks and springs?

Timing belt WAS included in my 90K.
Worth doing - I find that every time I have the dealer work on my car (which is only every 30-45K), they find something else that they fix or adjust for me and they don't charge me extra.

I just had the 90K mile service done on my 1998 GS400. I was planning on driving down to San Diego to visit with my brother while he was in town which meant I would be going right through LA on my way there. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to take my car in to Todd at TM Engineering in Carson. We set up an appointment and Todd spent most of the day going over my car. He is very meticulous and has an expansive breadth and depth of knowledge of the electrical and mechanical systems of the car. Other than the crank seal, he did everything on your list as well as:
replace the timing belt idler pulleys
oil change and filter
flush the brake fluid
replace the air filter with K & N
replace the accessory belt
He used synthetic fluids for the oil and differential, Toyota fluids for coolant and transmission.
In addition he installed the TRD strut tower bar and lower chassis brace I had bought from Sewell Lexus as well as the Daizen front and rear sway bars I bought from him for NO CHARGE.
To top it off, he even bought me lunch!
My car runs great and handles like a dream. Freeway ramps that say 45MPH can be taken at 80 , no problem. Lane changes at 90 MPH, its like mind control-- you think it and it just happens.
Anyone within a couple hours of Los Angeles, I highly reccommend TM Engineering for your service or tuning needs.

DJKLEX - I work for the sister company of JM Lexus so we get an employee discount of 50% off all service so my $400 is not fair benchmark because it included 90k service, timing belt, and water pump.

If you read the 90k service brochure from virtually all Lexus dealerships, timing belt change will NOT be on there. They know it has to be done at 90k but all you will get is an inspection of timing belt at most if you just go with the service according to the schedule .
