Default tiptronic shifting not working

I'm having issues with my tiptronic shifting auto disengaging. The shifter doesn't actually move back to "D", but from the display panel I notice it's no longer in manual. Has anyone seen this and know what's causing this? Any help is appreciated. Note: I've just acquired the car and perhaps it's because I don't really understand how e-shifting works.

Car:89 GS400

Thanks,
Dennis

Where can I buy a 89 GS400? Is it all wheel drive?

I assume you meant 98 GS400. I am moving this out of the 1st gen forum.

under what circumstances does it move "out" of the manual mode?

and does the tranny really go back to the normal D?

LOL yes.. I meant to say 98.

any how.. tonight I actually noticed it is the shifter that is ever so slightly moving away from the 'M' position that is causing the e-shift to turn off.

I'm not sure if it's worn out , or if there is something I can tighten to make the shift into Manual stick, but it is definitely moving back over to the 'D' position just enough to turn off the e-shifting ability and still not be all the way over to 'D' which is why i didn't catch this originally.

Thanks for any assistance.
