Hopefully this isn't too overdone...
I've just committed to join the GS family, I just can't quite decide which to get. The choice is between an 01 GS430 or a 99-00 GS400. If I go with the 400 I can put a couple grand into to mods right off the bat. If I go GS430 the timeline gets drawn out a bit. Just from what I've read, the steering wheel tiptronic sounds appealing, but so does a car that's a year newer and likeley to have less miles. I appologize to those forum veterans if this is an overasked question, but it seems like most on this forum have the mod bug already so I'm likely to get a biased answer in that direction.
Thanks in advance,

Welcome to ClubLexus Stoner!
Yeah, it is a bit overdone ! Most purchasing questions get asked many times and you can find 'em with search. For your question should I get a GS400 or GS430?, I searched for "gs400 gs430 difference' and found the following threads among others.

I joined the lexus family two weeks ago with a 98 GS400 and let me tell you the more I drive this car the more I love it. I could keep this car stock and be happy. Its just all around awesome.
The E-shift is def a nice touch in the GS400s, but whatever apeals to you and your budget. Keep us updated

the gs430 engine is smoother... but gs4's tiptronic is pretty cool to use...but I like 01+'s wood steering wheel.... after all, I bought my 99 gs4 blk/blk and get rid of my 01 LS430 UL
I am only 24 and LS430 is just not my type of car... I gonna drive the gs4 for at least 6 month and wait for the gs450H

i've had the gs400 for about two weeks too (pearl white - bone stock) and i love it. only reason we bought it was because the child seat didn't fit in my wife's modded 240sx (now its mine - i have two toys, the truck and the coupe)
when i test drove both, honestly i couldn't tell the difference. the only thing i can say is that there are some gs400's out there with great 1st, 2nd owners that make them better cars than gs430s - simply just better maintained.
i went to some shady used car lot, and the leather was all faded and ugly, interior pretty bad. because from what hear, these motors go easy 200k+ (300k+ according to that guy who was posting here) so i figured that i go with the better value. dunno where you are but '98s and '99 are easily below 20k (paid 19 for mine... had 72k miles, original owner) so like you said - go with the mods...
but honestly, the gs is such a nice car that i'm not sure if i want to mod it.... my list of maybes are
1. intake
2. borla exhaust
3. window tint
4. shift **** (leather is a bit faded)
5. chrome license plate garnish
6. chassis stuff - stb, FR/RR lower braces
not even sure about the suspension cause it rides so nice.
either one you pick i'm sure it will be an awesome ride
