I purchased a GS430 w/o Nav/ML because the wait was too long to get it. They have located one for me with 4000 miles on it and want to do a trade. I am not sure what they trade is yet. I have 1700 miles on mine. Would it be worth the $4800 difference for the System? I know the new Nav is DVD based, but does it play DVD's while in Park? Does any one know this for sure?
Its not a big deal for me if I don't get the upgrades, especially if I have to take a large loss to get it. I will not take the loss. I don't like aftermarket DVD systems, due to the fact that I like factory looks and it doesn't draw attention to theives looking for aftermarket radios.
Thanks for any input,
Khanh

The Nav/ML system in the 2001 GS's will NOT play Video DVD's. It lacks the proper "decoder". It's similiar to a DVD drive you buy for your computer...without a DVD decoding video card (like ATI's) or software to decode the DVD video's information, you get basically a high capacity CD-ROM drive.
I think some folks in Japan are working on a "add-on" kit to give you DVD video....
As for the trade, just don't get screwed in the deal...if it's a dealership, they're going to offer you Blue Book LOW WHOLESALE for your car and ask Blue Book HIGH CONSUMER for their GS. Make sure they're getting numbers out of the SAME Blue Book...
For me, I can't imagine driving my GS w/o the Nav system. It's awesome and I think I want Nav in ALL my cars from now on! The ML system is good so long as you don't listen to any hardcore Jungle/Drum 'n' Bass...

Purevil - I agree with you, it does NOT make sense....I have no idea what Lexus was thinking...But I've talked to a few Lexus Techs and they all said that the GS doesn't have the DVD Decoding software...
I think it might be because the GS was the first 2001 model out with the Navigation system...maybe the later ones do have it (has anyone bought a GS that was built in 2001?), but I have a early one (bought it late last year) and I have tried various DVDs and got nothing...

I think the best way is to make the nav can do power input/output, and make it TV. AS soon as the TV works, you can add Playstation 2 as a DVD device. . trouble free = ). that's what i am gonna do, any suggestion?
