Default Newbie needz advice-17" or 18"

Hi,
Im new here so dont shoot me!!!

I just got a 03 gs430, and im thinking on gettin some new wheelz. I wanted 17's so the ride quailty is still good, but I really like the way 18 look. What I was wondering is if i get the 17 with 215/45/17 will it look to narrow?

Here is what they look like.
17" gunmetal

And here are the other wheels im looking at.
18"/7, even more narrow.

Thoughts, comments?

Thanks in advance

I would go with the 18's especially if you are going with a wheel that has a "lip" like you have shown. Actually, I'd recommend staying away from a lip to make the wheel appear even larger. The large body of the GS tends to dwarf most wheels.

For tires you need to go wider. 235 and up.

don't get anything less than 8 imho, that's just a waste, might as well get the stock 17s that are already 17x8 with 235 tires

personally i would get 18s AT LEAST as well

20"

... oh, I'm sorry, what was the question?

Seriously, you'll need to do 18s to even consider this an upgrade- after all, the GS comes with an
optional 17x8 with a 235/45-17.

I would look for a nice 18x8.5 wheel with 245/40-18s

235/45/17 or 245/40/18 will be closer to the diameter of stock 16" tire. Try this link:

If you have ANY interest in your car's handling, you cannot put 215s on your car. As far as looks, in profile it may look ok but from front or rear you'll look very ghetto.

You'll have crap for handling and damn little traction in a straight line. From a ride standpoint, 20s with a tire with low enough profile so as not to significantly alter your speedo/odo readings will turn your GS into a coal cart unless you plan on going with coilovers, too. Remember that your tire sidewall height is as much a part of your comfort and handling equation as are the springs and shocks (with which the wheel/tire combo is designed to work).

But it's your car............

If you go with 18's, 245/40 on 8.5 front and 275/35 on 9.5 or 10 looks really nice.

I was in the same position as you. I've been using the 16s for a very long time. The ride is verrrrry comfortable, but only on straight driving. The turns are extremely horrible, worst than my sister's civic; I'm not exaggerating either

Then I wanted to upgrade the wheels for looks and also a little better performance, but still wanted to maintain the comfort.
I was going to buy the stock 17s or go to 18s. My wife said if you're going to spend $ for wheels, might as well get something different and nicer , so I ended up with 18s
The ride is slightly rougher, noticeable on bumps, but the handling is so so much better.

LIke many members mentioned, don't bother going with anything less than 235.
If you want to be conservative, the minimum is 235/45 for 17s and 245/40 for 18s
But if you upgrade your wheels, at least change your shocks. It's definitely night and day, a lot less body roll when you turn and still lexus-comfortable.
Good luck, let us know what you decide

The wheels you chose are very small, maybe ok for an IS, but I would stay away for a GS.
Find something in 17x8.

Does you car already have 16's or 17's.... Either one still your spending xtra money on your cars first aftermarket rims. For the car both of those are two small..it will look bad. Because of the fat shape, and shape of the wheel well- 18's should be the minimum if you have potholes. But that still loos small. 19's or 20's are the way to go. I strongly suggest you SAVE your money and then get something better. If you photochop them on your car correctly, then with 20's you''l see a big difference just in looks. You should looks at the vendors forum cause there are always deals here on good quality rims which you wont have problems with. The first rims you picture look alot like these volks. Do you like these more?
Here are those volks

Then here is a pic of aftermarket 17's

Here are some 20's-....perfect

and 20's see the difference.....worth just waiting cause youll probably be happier in the end.
