it is my understanding that your car requires a clear coat or a 2 stage paint job, standard black and a clear. on a pearl finish it's 3 stages (color, pearl, clear).

hope this helps. i wouldn't second guess a body shop since they should know what they're doing.

I can tell you for a fact that all of the MKIV Supras in black DID NOT have clearcoat. I know because I owned one, and been down that road many times.

I dont know for sure what the black Lexus has, but Lexus = Toyota......black Supra nop clear coat could = black Lexus no clear coat!

F it, if your getting the whole car painted, then get it cleared....cant hurt!

By the way, your body shop should know the answer to this question!

Is there a downside to getting the clearcoat put on? If not then I would tell them to clear it. It will probably make your life easier

its something like that.. black onyx doesnt have a clearcoat.. but its likely something like the clear is mixed into the paint, somewhat like the cheap jobs from earlscheib. not saying that its cheap, but i think they do the same thing.

Its not mixed in, there is no clear on the black. After thinking about it some more, I went through these same questions when I had my black GS.....

just make sure they are careful at the doors.... I had my car repainted and they put so many coats on that when I open the doors now it creeks a bit, plus the door, hood, and trunk all feel heavier now. I gotta take my car back to get the door hinges fixed... this creaking noise is embarrasing.
