Sometimes it just doesn't feel right to fill up your car with regular. One time I did it by and the gas guy looked at me all funny, like what are you doing and are you kidding me?! ;-)

Maybe the answer to the oft-repeated octane question should be posted in FAQs.........but most likely the FAQs don't get read by those who don't make even a cursory search of the previous threads.
It is always surprising to me when the question comes up since, as bitkahuna has pointed out (patiently and frequently, to your lasting karmic credit, bitmaster) it only costs about $100/yr, which is something on the order of 0.2% if the price of a $50k car, AND a very small chunk of your overall cost of ownership (you know, all that boring crap about insurance, depreciation, maintainence...........but those are still real dollars that you are really paying one way or another).
Why give up the performance that YOU ALREADY PAID FOR?? Why drop your mileage (thereby losing some of the "savings")? Your engine electronics are not likely to let you ruin your engine by detonation from too low an octane for your compression ratio, but, again, why chance it?
Sorry for the rant, but I'm just back from the beach and undergoing vacation withdrawal. Makes me testy while catching up on the threads.
