Default NAV update for 98 GS400?

Guys,

Is my only option to update really to pay $300 at my Lexus dealer + 1hr labor? Do you get the update on CD or something at the end of it or no?

Also, they told me that I should wait until September when the new update comes out. Anyone know if this is really when it comes out?? Guy I was talking to didn't seem to know much of what he was talking about?

Bear in mind this is the 98 so it has the HD in the trunk.

I also have the 98 version on my navigation system. The only way of upgrading it is by swapping out the hard drive with the newer version. I think what they do at the dealer is they take out your hard drive and then insert you another one with the latest version on it.

Johnny,

I've read that the HD Nav will receive no more updates from Lexus past fall 2003.

Don't forget you can get from our CL vendors like Lexus-Parts and get 10% off using our CL discount code “CL911M”

Another thing to check into... if the nav on your GS has NEVER been updated, you may be able to request a free upgrade from Lexus. I believe the original 1998 models were sold with one free update. Unsure if this would only be done under the warranty period or not, but its worth asking.

Dave,

Thank you. Mine was last done in 2000 so I am guessing that the owner took advantage of the upgrade.

I will look into what you said about it not being updated. They told me the new one was coming out but the guy I was speaking to really did not seem too well informed.

If I do order it I will certainly take advantage of the CL sponsors,

Regards,
Jonny

I've had 3 upgrades, each a hard drive swap, worth it every time, for the updated maps, updates points of interest, etc.

What do you do with the old HDDs? Are they normal HDDs? I'm very handy with computers and I think the 98 I have has the original 98 software on the NAV. I'd like to stumble onto a lexus hdd or the software. I'm sure I could trick it into working.

Btw, by "normal," I mean IDE connected HDD since that was the norm in for that time period.

Dealer does a swap out when I've had it updated so there's no HDD left over. I've never seen the actual HDD but I believe I read or heard somewhere it's a standard connector.

Does it have rural areas? I have a 98 Version on my 99GS3, and it sucks in rural areas, like nothing at all.

The HD nav system has all interstate, U.S., state and county roads everywhere. It does not have every side street in rural areas. I live in a rural area in FL and my HD nav is still very useful.
