if it's a loose heat shield it will sound like metal rattling around. if it's air in the coolant, it would be a gurgling, swishing water sound.

alexus-kia, I am experiencing the same sound (metallic raspy noise) on my gs.300.02. When I took it in on Tuesday the dealer stated that they couldn't hear the sound. The sound seems to be amplified in parking enclosures and requires sensitive hearing (she's my baby so I know her cry). Anyway I went in to the dealer and took a test drive with the mechanic and identified the sound. The mechanic said it's the heat shield/exhaust manifold around the catalytic converter. They will be replacing it next week under warranty. My baby has 60K on it, however due to federal regulations components around the catalytic converter are covered to 80K. Also I have a great relationship with lexus service tech so that helps. Once replaced, I'll let you know if the sound goes away. Good luck identifying the source of your rattle.

Cheers euge
gs.300.02 mac interface coming soon.

I have the same problem in my 2000 GS400. This problem has been discussed in the past, but I can't recall if anyone suggested any solutions. The sound is "gurgling", more like runing water. Once I thought it was a lose screw in the intake manifold, but didn't find anything. If there is anyone out there with a similar problem please suggest a solution. I am sure we are not the only once. Thanks!

Put coolant into the top of the radiator in the front of the car. The stock radiator cap for the GS has a yellow sticker on it. NEVER open the cap when the engine is hot - steaming hot water can spray out all over you. The coolant you put in should be the same type that is already in there. The red Toyota coolant is stock and is prob what you have. It must be mixed 50/50 - 50% coolant and 50% DISTILLED water (get it at supermarket, etc.). Also fill the coolant reservoir up to the full line. The coolant reservoir is the white plastic small tank that is next to the radiator, you'll see a small hose going to it from the radiator.

if it is the bubbles in the coolant(which I'm still thinking it's the heatshield), I think you would need to let the car run with the cap off and the heater on for a few minutes. a little messy, but it will give the air a chance to circulate out.

I would not bother trying to fix it yorself if you don't know how to do it exactly, take it to a mechanic instead. the procedure should not be expensive and they will know exactly what to do. Please also keep in mind that if air in the coolant lines is the problem - the sound should be watery and not have any metallic sound resemblence (the closest association that comes to mind is when you drink soda with a straw and there is none left you get a water/air mixed sound kind of and if thats what you are hearing when you press gass, then adding coolant should solve it) if the sound is more like a metallic noise, then it probably has nothing to do with coolant. just my 2 cents.
