He said he called Lexus to find out about it and they said that the water pump doesn't need to be replaced on my model..2000 GS 400. He went ahead and changed it for me without charging me anyway. Can anyone vouch for that claim by Lexus?
Maintainance schedule calls for belt replacement at 90 K and water pump at 135 K. Many mechanics will advise changing the water pump with the timing belt even though its ahead of schedule since its taken off to gain access to the timing belt. It's only about a $90 part and you're already draining the coolant and have the hoses off and the pump removed. If not replaced then customer has to spend additional labor far in excess of the cost of the part to go back and do it later. I think the water pump replacement is like 3.5 or 4 hrs of shop time by itself but thats already included in the timing belt replacement.

You can get a Lexus water pump for a Vvti V-8 for $90.00? I'll take three.

i don't want to be an inconvenience, but can u ask your dealer and confirm this? the lexus.ca website clearly states 72 months (ie. 6 years) or 156,000kms, whichever comes first, as does my owner's manual.

is there that much of a difference between the 98 and 99 models?

what about the belt stretching over time? or is the tensioner supposed to compensate for that?

I am sure there isn't a difference Ben. Err on the conservative side and go with six years as you have found.

what year is your gs400?

over the phone the dealer told me the water pump must be changed regardless of whether it leaked or not because they didn't want to incur any more additional expense should it fail later... might as well do it now for peace of mind?

he also mentioned a number of oil seals as well... total was somewhere in the $700+ range, which includes the cost of the water pump installed, but no plugs. if the tensioner pulley is making any hint of noise that will have to be done too... another $200+ parts and labor on top
Wow! I guess im glad I have the 2jz model, because the timing belt is about a 45 minute to hour and a half job depending on how stubborn the crank bolt wants to be<DIY>.. I'll change the water pump at maybe 135k when I approach that mileage. My buddy's supra has over 270k miles with original parts, so I know these parts can last well beyond 90k miles with proper maintenace..

About $90 is what the dealer charges my independant mechanic. I found a Toyota OEM waterpump on ebay for $75 shipped. Haven't seen another that cheap since though or I'd buy 3 myself as I have 3 Lexus's with the V8 engine. (92 SC, 98 GS, 2000 LX)
