There is a chip on the rear driverside wheel well. It's a little deep and I just noticed there is a tiny bit of rust in there. I am going to buy some of that factory touch up paint, but what should i do before applying this to ensure that my GS doesn't get the cancer all over the rear quarter panel.

umm...isnt the exterior under warranty for perforation from corrosion for the life of the vehicle? The best way to stop rust is sand away the rust, apply primer then your base coat, pearl (if required), and then clear. Now...since we dont want to sand a nice finish away...the next best thing is to apply the touch up paint and clear.

GRRRRRRRRRRr, this thing isn't under warranty any longer as it is a 98. I don't think there is a lifetime warranty against it getting chipped to start the rust. I guess I'll be sanding this damn thing.

ok...corrosion perforation protection for 72 months/unlimited mileage...from the owners manual "Check the condition of your vehicle's paint and trim. If you find any chips or scratches in the paint, touch them up immediately to prevent corrosion from starting. If the chips or scratches have gone through the bare metal, have a qualified body shop make the repair."

Guitarman once gave me some advice and I'll pass it on. First of all, don't worry, it's not that big of a deal. The rust you're seeing is on the surface. It would be much more of a problem if it was coming up from beneath the paint. You should go to your local autoparts store and buy a product called "rust converter." A lot of different companies make this product, and it really doesn't matter which one you buy. Anyway, take a very small touch up brush (or you could even use a toothpick) and apply the rust converter to the affected area (try not to get it on the surrounding paint). The rust converter (which is a white liquidy substance) will convert the rust to a hard black paintable surface. After 24 hours, you can apply the touch-up paint and you should be good to go.
