Its the light sensor that determines when your mirror's auto dimming function kicks in.

I thought it was for the autodimmer. So it knows when it's dark out.

EDIT: Person above beat me to it

It's the sensor for the auto-chromatic mirrors.

The auto headlight sensors are on the dash board where it meets the windshield. They look like black caps.

That's right.
Take a piece of paper and cover those black round caps and your headlights will turn on.

ummm, this doesn't make any sense. the autodimmer takes place when you have bright light from BEHIND you, not in FRONT of you. why would the sensor be facing forward. when a car pulls behind you and high beam you, the mirrors start working and dims. if there is a car from towards you from the front and high beam, why should the mirror dim?

but i know for sure that's not the headlight sensors, like chicago posted, those are the black caps on the dash.

no clue.

There are two sensors to detect the amount of light for activating the autochromatic mirrors. The sensor that is pictured above is behind the mirror and senses the amount of light in front of teh vehicle. The other sensor is in the front, it's small and round and in teh mirror. It detect the amount of light shining into the car from the rear. They work together. If you're sitting in a garage with your rear facing the garage door with it open, the sensors will detect the small amount of light at the front end and the excess light shining from the rear tricking it into thinking it's a car's bright lights and the dimming will be activated. Happens when you're going into tunnels as well.
