So Lexus screwed us 98 owners with Nav
Guys,
So to verify what has been stated on here before, I spoke with the head parts guy at my local Lexus dealer and he verified that 2003 was and is the last year the NAV for the 98 will be updated. He said by 2003 there was no more room on the harddrive to hold anymore data.
He also said that there is no easy way to switch over to the newer NAV and none of the wiring is interchangeable.
I asked him if Lexus plan on doing anything to help us, and in short he said they have given us the shaft.
Really dissappointing that our NAV will soon be pretty useless. In the city I live in it has about 5 of the 30+ major streets. In essence it is useless here.
What do you guys think about this?

What he says is reasonable. Lexus changed the system in 01 but still supported the HD version until 03. At some point, they will probably not support the system in the 01-05 cars too. Retrofitting an 01-05 Nav into a 98-00 is doable, just not the most bang-for-the-buck.
In any case, I agree that it sucks but I don't think Lexus intended to "screw" the 98 (and 99 and 2000 ) owners. It is just a matter of technology getting outdated.

My thought would be to dump some of the POIs in favor for updated roads. I doubt that will ever happen though.
There are only one or two major roads that aren't in my 98 Nav (2002 update version). They also aren't in my 2003/4 Eclipse Nav either, so I don't feel so bad.
The OEM nav in my 98 LS is very far from 'useless' IMO. Use it all the time.

I would expect them to offer upgraded HDs (instead of these newly-flashed refurbished ones) for 98~00 owners. If they have parts for Lexuses that are 10 years + old, they should have updates for maps on HD units for 10 years too. Then I wouldn't be complaining.
