Anyone heard of a DIY Alignment kit?

I have seen DIY alignment kits in some car parts/tools catalogs.

There are two devices that I know.
1) A small platform which goes under the wheel [two, one each for each front wheel] and it lets the wheel to be turned ... side to side and not rotate. There are grduations marked on the circumfrence.

2) This piecec hangs on the studs of the wheel and mesures angle from veritcal.

Then I have seen (in a different continent) mechanics use a string and use various triangulations techniques to determine what is square and then do adjustments.

I sincerely think the racks used by shops will give you the best adjustments. I have heard [fact or fiction?] that you have to fudge the specs if you have changed your suspension.

Or...electronic alignments, which are obviously the best
