I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone was able to determine the cause for this problem and/or a fix?

Thanks,

this sounds simple, but I had the thump and it was a quick fix.

the big nut/plastic washer that holds the spare in place was loose. this was causing the spare to move back and thump whenever I'd hit the gas half way hard from a stop.

chuck thanks for the reply. I removed my spare and I still here the "knock". I also tried jiggling the exhaust to see if that was loose and causing the problem but that did not help either. The sound seems to be coming from where the drive shaft is located.

Also, I see some other member who had the same issue determined that it was not the spare tire that was making the sound. I wonder if they ever got that fixed?

Any other ideas guys?

Thanks,

is the car under 70k miles? if so, maybe it's covered under factory drivetrain warranty.

yeah the car just hit 50k. I called the dealer and they said that they will have a tech listen to it and if it is coming from the drive train they will repaire it under the powertrain warranty.

i figured out my problem... it was from one of my motor mounts being completely broken in half and the other pretty worn....... that was causing the thump sound.. but me nor the mechanic couldnt figure out why we heard and felt it in the rear

I had this same problem with my old Ls and i turned out the rearend needed to be replaced. I just went to a junk yard and bought one for 300 bucks and spent about 45 min replacing. Its a real quick fix if you can find a nice donor rear end.

I sure hope that if it is really the tranny mount, the dealer fixes it under warranty. I dont even want to know what it would cost if I have to pay out of pocket!

ok boys and girls.... I got my car back and the problem is fixed!!!!!
It turned out to be lose front suspension bolts! The tech re-torqued them and the car has no more thumping sound. When the tech went out on a test drive with me he thought it might be the "hub" or "bearing". But I guess after doing further test and all it was a very simple fix. I am glad this annoying sound is gone.
