I faced the same problem when I installed my AVIC-D1 a few months ago.
I put in a Pioneer GM-3100T power amp (4 ohms @ 120 watts bridged) and a Kicker Comp 10" sub. I chose the Kicker Comp because it could be installed attached to the rear deck (no trunk mounted box) like the factory unit. I could have installed the 12" Kicker but already had the 10" one in my possession. I drive the amp directly from the RCA subwoofer output of the AVIC-D1. I used the AVIC-D1 internal amp for the satelite speakers.
The amp is also attached to the rear deck adjacent to the subwoofer. I did have to make up a mounting plate for the woofer since the rear deck is a bit flimsy and might not of held the weight reliably.
Not the most powerful or efficient bass system but it beats the factory unit at a very reasonable cost. I bought the AVIC-D1 mainly for the GPS; power audio was not a primary factor in my selection.
Let me know if I can be of further help.

ps. You'll need to change the factory sub. It's impedance is not compatible with any standard or non factory amplifier.
