Actually, if you want a great tire for a low price, try the Kumho's...

Here's some prices from Tire Rack...

245/40-18 sells for $125 each
275/35-18 sells for $164 each

Totals out to $578 + shipping (it's $31 for FexEx Econo 2 day to Los Angeles)

Several of my friends have Kumhos and they work excellent (and these are on high performance cars like a 3000GT VR4, a Porsche 911, etc.) And the way these guys go through tires, they've tried practically every brand on the market and they love the Kumho's (the price is just a bonus!)

I buy a set if they made the sizes I need in 20"...

as usual, manaray has pointed out good value stuff. Kumho is a very good tyres for the price.

for the TOYOs, make sure you get the T1-S, it is the top of the line, without the high price. well, sort of.
if my budget allows, i would also get the toyos. my friend runs a tyre shop here in LA. and as you said, most shops here want $1000 for 4, installed. my bud said, he would install a set for ~$925.

or something less $$, yoko's avs db is not bad either.

I was quoted $1300 for 245/40/18 +275/35/18 Toyo T1-S's installed!

Gotta find somewhere less expensive here in Atlanta.

I'd buy over the net but then any place that will mount/balance them is likely to make it not such a great deal in the end.

Why doesn't Tirerack sell Toyos!?

Bit and D-man,

i actually talked to both tirerack and toyos rep about this issue at my buddy'd tyres store before.

when toyo decided to enter the us market, its goal was to have repair garages and specialty wheel and tyre sotes market its products. since we all know that the rack usually have good prices/lower profit margin. this would prompt many stores refuse carrying toyos. basically it is all in the marketing and distribution techniques. actually several years ago the rack did carry toyos. but at the time toyos were not that good in quality and the name was not that well-known. the rack ended up having hugh clearance on the toyos.

but the prices on the retail level for the toyos are very confusing. i can get a set in the size which Bit mentioned for under $1k. even without my "friendly" discount, the price still ranges from $1000-1150 here in LA.
over the course of time, toyo decided to pump more $$$ into R&D, advertising and marketing, especially in the aftermarket arena thru sponsorship and more ads. toyos are gradually becoming household names among car dudes.

Yokohama ADVAN Neova....... I wish I have them, anyways

Bridgestone RE730 and Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 are good choices. Resonable price too.

Express Tire (So Cal) told me that Toyo has a promotion going on right now, buy 3, get one free. Total for 4 235/45-17 T1-S including mounting and balancing: $623 ! Looks like I will be going with the T1-S today

Default New Tires

Just got the T1-S installed at Express Tire in San Marcos (just east of Carlsbad). I believe that the sales contact was Scott Friedman. Tried to sell me on the FZ-4's because he was afraid that I might end up thinking that the T1-S are too aggressive. Sorry, I am not some senior citizen.

$623 all inclusive including Express Tire warranty. Go to www.expresstire.com for the address / number. Again, Toyo promo through end of August. I believe Express will beat any price. Never bought anything from Express Tire before, and they were professional, quick, high on customer service. I will likely be a repeat customer.

As for the T1-S compared to the Dunlop SP8000's? Off the bat, actually no comparison. T1-S has better steering response, better ride, lower noise, and less expensive! I will have to take them out for an extended run tomorrow with various pressures to really evaluate. Very aggressive look / wide tread, which might be perfect for some, not so great for others. I think they look very good on the GS. Was going to go with the Yoko AVS Sport, but these look to be a good alternative.

good choice with the toyo's. I had the Yoko's AVS when I had my 18" lowenharts and it was awesome too. You can't go wrong with both, but IMO toyo has a slight edge.

Default New Tires

Have lived with the Toyo T1-s (on stock alloy 17" wheels) now for a bit over a month and I can honestly report that they are FAR superior to the Dunlop SP8000 and the "stock" Bridgestones. I am VERY impressed and happy with the T1-S. In hard corners, the car rides on rails, and quick high speed lane changes can be taken with confidence and effortless control. The tires also bite better on launches. Tire noise is much lower than the other tires when they were new as well. Lastly, the look on the car is excellent. No real negatives, especially for what I paid for them. I can recommend the T1-S 110% in this price range. It has to be one of the best values out there in a high performance tire.
