Angry 2001 GS430 trunk lid falls (after opening) when parked on incline

When I park my car in my driveway which is on an incline and I open my 2001 GS430 trunk, the trunk lid always falls and hits my head.

I took it in to the dealer 3 times, and they tightened it twice and replaced the unit once and it stills happens. They obviously did not test it when parked on an incline.

It seems the trunk is gravity fed and does not have any struts. Very lousy design. I talked to a Lexus technician and he said some 2001 GS430's have struts and others don't.

Any of you guys have this problem? Does anyone have struts on their 2001 GS430 model?

Thanks

do you have a trunk spoiler? If so, then the extra weight is no match for the trunk struts....you can try adjusting the trunk tension rod.

Here's a pic (courtesy of BananaGS)....

Default I do not have a spoiler and the lid still falls

Thanks, I do not have a spoiler and the dealer tightened the tension rods and replaced them and it still happens.

Anyone have struts in their 2001 GS430?

Thanks,

Could you let me know the part number of your struts so I can ask Lexus to put hese in my car? Or send a picture maybe?

Unfortunatly the houses in California have small lot sizes so my front driveway is way to short to back in. Nice suggestion though.

Default Just a suggestion

Perhaps you should try wearing a helmet.... j/k I got a 98 and do not have the same problem. Good luck in finding your fix.

Joe, it's not a 'tightening' ... its more the placement in the correct hole. Take a look and see what setting yours is set in.

I have a spoiler and a bunch of dynamat on my trunk lid and it doesn't fall on my head at all.

Struts would be news to me too.

I assume when the dealer replaced the tension rods, they replaced it with the stronger ones meant for trunk lids with spoilers? Otherwise, I cannot see how replacing it will help. On the other hand, I don't know how the lid will behave when opened with the stronger rods.

This happened to me the other week. Was pretty dazed. I gotta remember this next time.

Live and learn, right.
