hmm.. interesting.. i have stock ones and they seem so DIM actually ONE of my headlights is brighter than the other, i don't understand it? like the driver side one is more halogen (non HID) looking but the passenger side has a nice purple tint, the driver side bulb i had to have replaced and they said it was not the same color because it was newer? but that doesn't make sense?

If the guy had brighter lights than you.....one possibility is that he has the halogen plug and play "hid kit". Those usually have a ton of glare....and thus what you see as the "brightness blowing you away".
One other possibility....what I have in my car is a Bi-Xenon projector setup which the one projector can act as a low or high beam by moving a internal cutoff shield which is moved by an electrical solenoid. I am still using the stock M5 4300K bulbs that came with the hid components when I did my retrofit. When I hit the high beams, it is BLINDING! I can light up highway signs about 1/2 mile down the road so brightly that they look like european illuminated highway signs!
Third possibility is that they have a high wattage aftermarket ballast. HID bulbs have a burn life of around 3000hrs or so at 35watts. However, they are designed to be able to burn at around 50-65watts(1000hr life?), but this wattage is not implemented due to the DOT laws with the lunems output and such. 35w hid(stock) is already bright as hell, what kind of damage do you thinkg a 65w bulb will do! However I am interested in the aftermarket ballasts tho it wouldnt hurt to be able to light highway signs a mile down the road as long as I keep on low beams whenever there are any other drivers nearby
Edit: If any of you in the DFW area see a GS with blinding HID's from half a mile down the road....then you will know I forgot to switch off the high beams
